Comment spamming

   I got a nice comment on my Kenneth Branagh hub:
   
   "Great information. I'll have to put some of your suggestions into practice."
   
   Makes me thing the person didn't even read the hub...marked as spam

   I assume that these are meant to drive traffic to the profile. I now spam them, too. Though when you're new sometimes it's hard to tell the difference!

      I avoid spamming spammers. If others see it they'll think you're a spammer too.

   I've recently had an onslaught of nasty comments on my shoplifting hub. People trying to get personal with their attacks...
   
   Anyone else having this problem?

   I sometimes leave the nasty/spam comments posted and even entertain them. Good or bad publicity is still publicity for your hub. It generates a buzz in Hubtivity.
   
   Besides, sometimes they are quite entertaining

   Just kidding... Anything like the above that is generic I delete. I don't comment unless I have something SPECIFIC to say, and that's what I assume 99% of REAL commenters do toO. So if it's a generic "great post" or "good stuff" I say DELETE!

   I would prolly say that he was trying to get a fan to drive up traffic, because im new to this aand i don't have hardly any traffic on my sites, so he prolly just wanted people to check him out

    I don't know if those comments are all spam, BadCompany had a thread over the weekend asking what made people comment. Several folks said they were happy when someone left a small comment like "great hub," rather than leave without commenting at all.
    
    I don't want people to think that I'm comment spamming so I always say more than that. So I don't leave as many comments

       When I spam a comment it is usually because it comes from one of several hubbers who apparently have a list of comments that they continually copy and paste into hubs as they read them, and most of the time they don't relate to the hub (great advice! On a hub about why I like myself, for example).

       If he/she had said "great hub" I would have left it. His/her comment had nothing to do with what my hub was about.

    I think you are being a bit unfair, sometimes I havent time but I like a hub so I would leave ashort enjoyed your hub, nice 1, wheras when I have time I will leave a longer comment, either way I like to show appreciation by a comment. As for spamming for reads, personally again I really dont worry about hub members reads, I am trying to attrack the direct traffic from google.

       I agree. I do not always have time to give a lengthly comment, but I enjoyed reading the hub, so I give a thumbs up so to speak.

       You aren't spamming, and that's not what (I think) we're talking about. I'm sure you've gotten a few of them too... Where the comment is only noticeably generic because of how much it doesn't apply to the hub in question.
       
       For example, if somebody commented on your most recent hub saying "Cute boys!" or something similar. These comments just don't make sense!

    Sometimes I like to leave a generic comment if I'm short on time and see a Hub worth driving some traffic its way.  I guess if I thought someone just wanted me to fan them, I'd still leave the comment stand.
    
    Of course, I get VERY few comments (>1% of my readers comment) so perhaps I would delete these if I was trying to reduce the clutter.

    I would agree with BC99.  Sometimes there is not much that can be said, but I would rather know that someone has read it, and enjoyed it, than left after the first line. 
    
    The only comments I have deleted are those letting me know that the person did not read the hub, as Uninvited Writers comment indicates, or when it is truly spam -- "Come read mine on this topic!"
