" Jaws "....Sitting near the front row in a wide-screen theater, after waiting in a long line to see this flic when it came out in 1975, I had the living crap scared out of me, my wife, and my three kids...Something viscerally terrifying about being eaten by a shark, in the dark, without warning...The musical score was scary in itself...Even the comic relief when the three main actors are singing and toasting to " swimin' with bowlegged women " you hear the music prefacing the sharks return....You want scary..? Watch this film in the dark, in stereo, and you won't be heading out to the beach anytime soon..Larry

I'm not a huge fan of horror films.. Carrie did it for me after watching it alone one night while living in a home with no neighbors..nothing but our house, woods across the street and darkness. I can't watch them alone. I think they're better to see in a theatre.

I'm more of a suspense fan than a horror fan, but if you are willing to try out classic films, you should watch Nosferatu-no other vampire has ever been as scary, not even the immortal Bela Lagosi, whom you should also watch; Psycho; The Birds; Villiage of the Damned, The Haunting, and Night of the Living Dead.  In all cases where there is a rermake, I mean the original.  More modern films to consider-i.e., since I was born in 1976-would be The Shining and Don't look Now.

Well... I'm not sure if it's "family" movie.. but one of the scariest movies -and I'm a movie buff- is SAW (the original). I remember the first time I saw that movie I was literally on the edge of my seat and the ending just shocked me to no end. And for what's it worth I don't scare easily.

Now that we have all seen it, and know the ending and the fact it's been bombarded with despicable sequels, it stands to lose quite a bit of its shock and scare value. BUT if you, or your family, have never seen it- then it is a very scary movie to watch... with the lights off, at 2 in the morning. (which is how I watched it!)

    20. R.S. Hutchinson profile image72
      R.S. Hutchinsonposted 12 years ago

Moreover, if you haven't seen The Killing Room .. that is DEFINATELY a must see. I think it's a little more of a thriller than a horror, but it does have some pretty putrid (say that 3 times fast!) scenes, not to mention will make you go, "hmmmmmmmmm" once you realize what is actually happening.
