    What are your favorite adages, phrases, and quotes? To be honest I haven't studied past historical and artistic figures and writers. I've always been a writer but lack the historic knowledge and base of phenomenal writers and authors.

    Enlighten me with your favorites please.........

    "You find no man, at all intellectual, who is willing to leave London. No, Sir, when a man is tired of London, he is tired of life; for there is in London all that life can afford." Dr. Johnson

    And the whole of Corinthians Chapter I:

        1: Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal.

    2: And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing.

    3: And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, and have not charity, it profiteth me nothing.

    4: Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up,

    5: Doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil;

    6: Rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth;

    7: Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things.

    8: Charity never faileth: but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away.

    9: For we know in part, and we prophesy in part.

    10: But when that which is perfect is come, then that which is in part shall be done away.

    11: When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things.

    12: For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known.

    13: And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity.

    When I read something I endeavor to remember the general idea of the book or passage, but I have never been big on quotes.  In school when we wrote research papers we had to quote people, but in my personal reading I really do not feel compelled to do so.  Many people have a quote from their favorite author on their website, and I guess I am just missing out because I have never read anything that I felt inspired enough to quote that often.  Quotes are fun to read though, I just do not collect them myself.

    1. MissJamieD profile image56
      MissJamieDposted 14 years agoin reply to this

      Thank you for being honest Sweetie Pie. I'm on the same wavelength as you too, I thought I was the only one. I've never taken away a single quote (except for the socially monotonous ones) from anything, but similar to what you stated, I too remember a general part of the story. I don't know why that is but I felt compelled to learn more quotes since most people use them. But now that I'm finding evidence of the contrary, I'm okay with the fact that I can't quote another writer. Thanks for sharing this with me, it really has opened my eyes. You helped me see that I'm not under-educated or 'beneath' another writer because I cannot exactly quote Shakespeare. Hugs

    “When you see that trading is done, not by consent, but by compulsion – when you see that in order to produce, you need to obtain permission from men who produce nothing – when you see money flowing to those who deal, not in goods, but in favors – when you see that men get richer by graft and pull than by work, and your laws don’t protect you against them, but protect them against you – when you see corruption being rewarded and honesty becoming a self sacrifice - you may know that your society is doomed.” Ayn Rand

    I have two favorite quotes. First is this one:

    "I'm sorry this letter is so long, I didn't have time to make it shorter."

    I was told decades ago that the quote was by Mark Twain (Samuel Clemens)but have since noted that it also was attributed to George Bernard Shaw and to Blaise Pascal.

    Secondly: Before I took up Shakespeare in high school I was so taken by Hamlet's "To Be Or Not To Be" soliloquy that I memorized the entire passage, which I could recite at any time -- although my fading memory is dubious these days.

    It's a lot easier for me to remember lines from songs than quotes from literature, the Bible, poetry, films.

    Here's two of my favorites, both from Maya Angelou:

    I've learned that you can tell a lot about a person by the way he/she handles these three things: a rainy day, lost luggage, and tangled Christmas tree lights.

    You did what you knew how to do, and when you knew better you did better. (Love that one -- helps me to stop beating myself up for past failures, foibles, sins and indescretions...
