I've noticed that the number in the corner of my profile picture has dropped a point or two .. or five. Now, I know I'm not GREAT looking but dang, I'm not ugly LOL. So what's that score in relation to the scores individual hubs get?
well, I knew it was a score but why does it keep dropping? I've only been a member for 24 hours, I've posted one Hub, had two comments and two "this hub was useful" button thingy presses. PLUS, add to that that I'm not ugly and wouldn't it stand to reason that my score should be flying through the ceiling? I started at 30 when I signed up and now I'm 24 .. I didn't like BEING 24 when I was 24 LOL
Twenty Four hours in. . . . .I didn't even notice that number. I was trying to figure out how to use the site.
The number is a mystery. Nobody can tell you exactly how it's figured, and it's done by software, of course.
The more you participate. . .the higher it will go. I think that using all forms of site participation helps it go high a LOT
Answer questions and ask them in the Q and A, comment other people's hubs, vote hubs up or down. So forth.
The real numbers that matter are the pennies or dollars that you make. . .IMO.
It goes up and down all the time. They say it's a secret (excuse me, "proprietary") algorythm. I'm not convinced anyone really knows. Mine goes up or down a few points practically every day.
Those in the know say that posting in the forums and commenting on other people's hubs can have a positive effect.
As you said, you've only posted one hub and haven't been here long--so not much yet to give a high score to right?
I wasn't asking for a high score - just questioned why mine was dropping.
The more you do both currently and cumulatively, the higher is goes. So it is dropping because of the things you are, um, not doing. (Hub hopping, answering questions, making hubs, getting traffic).
I posted to several forums, started several forums threads, commented and voted on several hubs and I'm still trying to determine when a piece is more appropriate as a "hub" versus a "thread"
One deciding factor would be the long-term value of the information; another would be how far beyond the borders of HubPages its value would likely extend; another would be its length in words. Look at a number of Hubs and compare them to the forum posts by the same Hubber, and that will give you additional clues.
Remember, Hubs are like newpaper or magazine articles, not like blog posts.
the thing is not to worry it rises and lowers all the time- it does reflect your activity but the point is not to get too hung up on it ! unless of course you get 100 ( it happens to me occassionally) and the first time it happens- yell loudly!!
It's meaningless for the first week.
It reacts in large part to what you write, and the hubscores of those pieces... and to interaction in the community...
Nothing you do today will have any major impact on your score tomorrow.
Mine went down even further... then was at 78 or so after a week.
It's basically like a penalty box for the first week or so to see if you're a spammer or will actually contribute.
Over the past couple days, I got rid of a half dozen low scoring and unpopular hubs, and everything else was on the rise... and my score DROPPED 5 points.
Go figure. Apparently the number of hubs was helping me or something... dunno.
Trust me it has absolutely nothing to do with beauty ,because Ive had a few diff pics...
Its a measure of activity across the board ,but mostly to do with quantity and quality of Hubs.
Just write a few more hubs, participate by making comments nad/or answering questions etc.
Be patient ,it takes times to grow the numbers, and it swings back n forth accordingly.
Welcome to Hubpages
Thanks for the great information, gang. Just to clarify, I'm not "worried" about getting a high score - was really just wondering why I was dropping so rapidly for, what I thought, was no reasonable reason. But I guess I need to get on it with Hubs and posts so I stop dropping. Man, I wish that were my waist size .. I remember the days of a 24" waist .. *sigh*
You are too cute! Looking at your photo you are at least a dozen above one hundred and then some! The number next to your avatar photo is your Hubber score; it fluctuates all the time! The number in your Hubs is your Hub number! Blessings, Earth Angel!

I used to be totally addicted to HP, couldn't wait to log on everyday to see what was happening, who and what was popping in the forums, what interesting hub made HOTD, and of course, how my stats and earnings were progressing. I looked forward to the rush I got from clicking "publish"...
