I recently joined a special-interest forum that allows linkbacks in forum posts. They have a pop-up that explains trackbacks, pingbacks, and whatever the third kind is (refbacks?). In theory, I understand these. I don't understand them in practice - other than having used Pingler for pinging.
Here's what I am asking: when the other forum asks if I want to trackback (or otherwise linkback) from that forum to my website or from my website to that forum, what exactly does that mean? What would I actually do? What would I see at each location? Or is it all invisible to humans, but visible only to the digital information on each site? Does it matter which I select?
I too am interested in a simple explanation of these terms. I understand the term 'back link' but find the other terms confusing.
I think that "linkback" and "backlink" are exactly the same thing.
You may be right, WTS, and I'm not arguing, but just trying to understand. When I checked the terms in Wikipedia (yeah, yeah, yeah, I know - it's Wikipedia ) each of those terms had their own page, and they were explained differently; and I did not see any links from one page to another or any disambiguation notices - for all that's worth.
The other forum that I mentioned has a policy that they/we are not allowed to post a link to our websites in a forum post (with the exception of certain specific subsections). But they do allow and even enable linkbacks in those same forums. That is part of my confusion.
What I think that is is a sort of filtering scheme to ensure that only relevant back links hit that site.
I don't exactly understand what you are saying here.
If linkbacks and backlinks are the same thing, why would they not allow backlinks in a post, but would provide a super-easy way for performing a linkback each time I post?
I decided to just go ahead and use the trackback box provided. I don't know whether it will do me any good or any harm. I hope only good! But I still don't know whether there is something that I, a human, should be able to see. If so, it's a fail.
I read your question and was hoping to see someone else answer it, because I too was mystified by the term. I also read the Wikipedia entry (which was marked incomplete) and was none the wiser.
Often forums don't allow backlinks in posts but do allow you to place a backlink in your signature - could that be it?
I honestly don't know, Marisa. From what I could see, they did not permit any kind of promotional link in the posts at all, with certain exceptions that I haven't really grasped yet.
Below the posting/reply box, they have a separate address-type box which is labeled "Trackback." In that box, it is permitted to post URL's - even more than one - of sites that are to be pinged.
I did go ahead and try this with three of the posts I made there today, using the URL of a specific Hub (a different one in each case). I don't know what that did, if anything. I haven't seen that those three Hubs have received even one new visit yet (as I thought perhaps might occur in some way).
I'm actually mystified by this.
I am heading off to sleepy-bye now, but I'll check this tomorrow. Eagerly awaiting answers!
Well as far as I know linkback is used to get better page rank. which in turn will give you better rank in search engine.the more linkback you have , the more higher you site appear in SE.It is generally used for SEO.
does that answer you?
I appreciate your attempt to help, very much! I didn't actually mean backlinks in this case, but I think the similarity of the two terms is rather confusing.
I was hoping to get some specific details about how a trackback or pingback or refback is accomplished, but in a dumbed-down version. I need to see the details from the POV of the human, not the computers or the webpages or sites.
backlinking in relevant forums is always a great idea for many reasons - but if you only put your links and leave without participating - you'll be looked at as a spammer, so always participate in the forums that you link your hubs to, is my advice.
I found an old Hub that described these linkbacks, but in terms practically identical with the descriptions on the other site. So I guess both of them copied from Wikipedia, perhaps?
Those descriptions tell me what the sites do, in computer terms. They send a signal. They acknowledge one another. They let each other know that something has taken place on one site that may be of interest on the other site.
I am wanting to know what I will see. Does a link show up somewhere on one site? Where? Or is it all just invisible?
When I use Pingler, I see the report that the address I submitted "has been pinged" to various sites, but I don't actually see anything, because I am not on the sites where the ping was sent. So I don't know what it looks like at that end.
Also, if I understand, both sites have to be ping-enabled in order to use that, and I don't know whether HubPages is.
I don't know whether a picture would help, so I'm attaching a screenshot.
As small as it is, you can't see much. But I think you can tell that the trackback box (next to the red arrow that I added) is separate from the forum post/reply box.
In either cases linkback or backlink is use to show your authourity or reference , in other words to learn more about the topic.
Always check Forum faq, Tos. Befor using it.

I've previously started a thread on this at http://hubpages.com/community/forum/141 … th-adsenseIn short, I used my YouTube AdSense account to apply for the Ad Program here at HubPages. For over a year, my AdSense account recorded absolutely no data and hits. Correspondingly, not even a cent...

First of, I don't really know what I'm talking about, or to be more specific, I don't know the name of what I am talking about. But thanks to a few hubbers on here, I have taken to backlinking the easy way. You backlink a hub to...for example...shetoldme...or blurbalicious...one of them anyway.Then...

Okay, I do understand that Pagerank doesn't carry the same importance that it once did, but I can't help but feel delighted when I see several of my Hubs with increasing Google Pagerank! They are mostly, but not exclusively, the older ones, so I naturally assume that age helps to boost...

Recently we've had several cases where Hubbers have been able to work together to get plagiarizing sites taken down. Those threads are very important but it's all too easy for Hubbers not to notice them. If we had a forum dedicated to that subject, we'd all be aware of the need to keep an eye...
