Do We Have the Right to Determine What is Done With Vital Resources?

I don’t know if it is true; but I have heard that the oil from what is being touted as the largest oil strike in history (in North Dakota) has already been slated to be shipped overseas for sale.

If true, I have several problems with the scenario.

I see it as foolish to use fossil fuels to ship a commodity, that can be used locally, vast distances; and then turn around and ship the same commodity back for local sale.

I see it as a blatant attempt to manipulate the market, to ensure that prices remain high.

There is a program called LEED here in the states.  It stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, and is an internationally-recognized green building certification system. It is a voluntary program and I am sure that there are similar programs in place to help guide corporations to find the greenest possible way to engage in manufacturing and distribution of their products.

I know we all hate regulations, but I see no problem with insisting that something as vital as oil be forced to be refined at the nearest refinery and sold at the nearest locations; only being shipped overseas if there is a surplus, or a need outside of our borders that supersedes our own needs.

Am I wrong? If so, I’d like to hear your thoughts.

I tell you what I would like. A world that isn't dependent on oil for its energy. I wouldn't give a fig if they shipped it, sat on it or put it where the sun don't shine. What happened to the natural energy sources I was led to believe would be around by now?!?! Also, where is my hoover car!?!
Seriously, as a kid what I really wanted was a VW bug solar car (or whatever other 'green' power source that everyone would be using). I really had hoped they would be normal by now sad
What gets up my nose is that oil (like so many other valuable commodities) is manipulated to create high prices, which makes someone lots of money. That money gives them power which corrupts them, leading to no end of mischief.

I've always said that if a president wanted a legacy worthy of being remembered they would lead the charge to get us off of fossil fuels. Build the infrastructure to support the technology, whether it be electric powered (which I'm not a fan of), hydrogen fuel cell or whatever it takes. Subsidize the purchase so every american could buy a car that worked within that structure and put an end to dependence on fossil fuels.

Since the oil companies own this country I don't expect that to happen in the foreseeable future.

Sadly, I have to agree. We are probably going to have to just about run out of fossil fuels before those in power actually do something to shift away from them. My worry then is that it might be too late... sad

My worst fear is that it already is too late.
