Many people are artistic and could add a lot of dimensions to their hubs by having more options to the layouts.  Perhaps an having an "Advanced" layout button, just for those who wish to use them.  Background colors, pictures and shading in boxes would really be nice.  At the very least, the ability to put pictures or Amazon on the left side as well!  I mean really could it be so hard?

the layout options are just a start. It cuts down the time it takes adding capsules based on the most used layouts by hubbers. When you start making your hub, you can add subtract or rearrange all you want. you can put amazon or whatever wherever you want

Sorry, went back and reread the Q again. My bad, thought you were asking something else. I would like to put stuff on the left as well, actually.

This is why I referred to a "Advanced layout" button just for those who want to use it.  Many hubbers are poets, artists and story tellers.  They would benefit from having creative license.
As for the basic article people, just for marketing if you are in this for the money, having the option to place the amazon capsule to the "Left" is a no brainer.

Allowing people the ability to 'bling' their page usually ends up with people (and when I say 'usually' I mean 'always') with no clue in design making a ghastly looking pages.

The value is in the content. The written words. Trying to obscure them or make them stand out (you're not going make anything stand out better than black on white) is a distraction from the core mission of HubPages.

And I could be wrong, but I do believe HubPages HQ have the same stance on the matter.

No thanks... The site would end up looking like myspace. I like the uniformity. There are enough options to make your page look nice with the current capsules and the ability to move them around.

I'm with darkside and Whitney on "bling".  Back in the days of DYI webpages, people who couldn't write and/or weren't artistic would use neon backgrounds and text 3 inches tall to make up for the lack of content and good layout.

But I do wish HP would give us the option to put photo and Amazon capsules on the left.

Being new here keeps me asking questions but on one of my hubs in which I write on a particular medical issue I found ads for colostomy bags which definitely was even remotely close to the topic. How to remove this kind of stuff?

May be you can ad that specific ad to "Remove This Advertiser " list in Adsense control panel.
It will help to an extend..and till some extend (200 Advertiser domains can be banned i think)

      Hope that helps

I second darkside on everything. I also think that this might have something to do with the positioning of ads.

With backgrounds ..i can agree....But some smooth , non-barking ones..selected by hubpages ... may add life to some hubs..
may be they are looking at it already...as added new layout options...
    something coming up ...next?
