   What is your favorite movie soundtrack and why?

      Don't think I have a definitive answer to this as I think certain soundtracks bring varying but equally effective qualities to a film. Taxi Driver must be a contender for the way the score superbly sets the tone for 70's New York whilst I must admit to being a sucker for the John Williams scores - particularly the ominous thump of Empire Strikes Back and the heroic fanfare of Raiders of the Lost Ark.
      
      Then there's the songbook style soundtracks like Pulp Fiction or American Graffiti.
      
      A recent brilliantly atmospheric soundtrack for me was 127 Hours.

         Thanks Gareth for you thoughtful response. I haven't seen Taxi Driver yet, but from the score alone I definitely want to check it out.

      My favorite soundtrack comes from Quentin Tarantino's Kill Bill.
      
      This man knows how to pick a song for a movie. He always seems to incorporate unique surf sounds and classic western songs in a scene that you wouldn't expect to hear those songs. I especially llove the songs in Kill Bill Vol. 1 where Uma Thurman kills all those crazy 88 assassins.

      The 200X spider man movie. I love how it sounds. Just has a feel I like. I also like the star wars music. I love a lot of it.

      I think I'd plump for the Bee Gees for Saturday Night Fever as best original popular music.
      
      For atmosphere it would be Betty Blue written by Gabriel Yared
      
      Also The Mission by Ennio Morricone

      too hard to pick just one.. I don't know what my favorite is, but I do like the Hans Zimmer film scores. Gladiator is one of my top favorites.

      I agree with shinkicker about Saturday Night Fever. What a great soundtrack and the theme song at the beginning is perfection.

   I love Purple Rain soundtrack. It's essential 80s and timeless. Unfortunately it's like 50 times better than the actual movie so I suggest just listening to the soundtrack.

   Two soundtracks we listen to often:
   "A Beautiful Mind" haunting and atmospheric (love + genius + mental illness captured in music)
   "The Firm" ecclectic (I can picture exactly where Tom Cruise is with each song. Love the movie and this soundtrack is fabulous).
   
   Also agree about Tarantino. The music in Pulp Fiction is great.

   Gosh, so many! I love the music from Braveheart because of the Celtic influence. I actually like just about anything from James Horner, including the soundtrack from Legends of the Fall. I also like the songs from Remember the Titans because they were popular when I was a teen. 10 Things I Hate About You has some great tunes, too - like this one. AWESOME song!

   This is a tough one to answer. I grew up watching musicals on film!   I choose for a single film Out of Africa. It had an amazing soundtrack that simultaneously lifted my spirits while the camera widened out for the most awesome panoramas. I had to swallow my emotional tears!  If I had to vote composers, it would be John Williams for the overall.

   So many great soundtracks...The Godfather, Chariots of Fire, Jaws, Jurassic Park all come to mind...But my absolute favorite soundtrack is from the film " Bladerunner " composed and played by Vangelis...Here is the Love Theme from that film ( knowing the context adds to the complexity of emotions shown ):

      Yes Maven, thanks for reminding me about Bladerunner. I love the last song "End Title" used in the director's cut where it starts right when the elevator doors close on Deckard and Rachel. Totally awesome sound queue.

    "The Phantom of the Opera" (Holds deep meaning for me and my late spouse)
    
    "Practical Magic" (It has Sandra Bullock in the movie and Stevie Nicks on the soundtrack--both ladies make this a winner for me. Plus it's a really great collaboration of music and uplifting storyline)

       Good point. Stevie Nicks was a great choice for Practical Magic. I just recently saw the movie and I enjoyed how sweet and quirky it was.

    I am one who loves a variety of music, but I am torn between two complete opposites on this question.  I believe that one of my most favorites of all time would be the score from Mary Poppins and the other favorite would be The Phantom of the Opera.  See what I mean....total opposites!

    Well, that could be a long list actually, but the one which sprang to mind is that of Blade Runner.  I think that Vangelis was responsible for that, and I liked Vangelis from the 80s.
