Spanish cemetery warns of evictions for nonpayment
MADRID (AP) Pushed for space, a Spanish cemetery has begun placing stickers on thousands of burial sites whose leases are up as a warning to relatives or caretakers to pay up or face possible eviction.
Jose Abadia, deputy urban planning manager for northern Zaragoza city, said Monday the city's Torrero municipal graveyard had removed remains from some 420 crypts in recent months and removed them to a common burial ground.
Torrero, like many Spanish cemeteries, no longer allows people to buy grave sites. It instead leases them out for periods of five or 49 years.
Abadia said the cases involved graves whose leases had not been renewed for 15 years or more. He said Torrero currently had some 7,000 burial sites with lapsed leases out of a total of some 114,000.

its tough in the afterlife to be worried about where to Rest In Peace when your lease is up....The Human Race never ceases to Amaze me. Pretend to believe in God while they worship the almighty currency.

0This is a great selling point for cremation and scattering your ashes in the wind. But Spain is not the only country that does that. Sad but true!
Absolutely nothing shocks me in this country anymore! Since Franco lost power, the Spanish people seem to have lost the plot.
Right now in Spain, every single council that changed political party this year (each town elects an alcalde (mayor) who has almost total power over public spending) has found that their predecessor outright lied about the amount of debt their council held.
So their debt is enormous and can't be paid back.
In one town, the entire police force went on strike because they haven't been paid for 6 months. Policemen aren't allowed to strike, so they all went off sick with medical certificates.
In another, the police are forced to walk to attend call-outs, because the council hasn't paid their petrol (gasoline) bill, and credit is not being extended further, because the garage owner is a small businessman himself and can't afford to be out of pocket by more than €100,000.
Yet another alcalde, faced with a million euro debt that his small council could never hope to repay, put the entire year's budget on the LOTTERY. I swear to God that is true, I could dig up the files. They lost the lot.
Pharmacists are running out drugs because the government has not paid the bill. In Alicante alone, pharmacies are owed multi millions of euros but there is no money in the pot.
Money that came from the EC has, just like in Greece, been squandered on things only rich countries could previously have afforded.
My wee village of only 1300 residents has an Olympic size public outdoor swimming pool, and they are just completing a state of the art football stadium complete with recreation rooms and in indoor heated swimming pool for all year round use.
We don't even have a decent access road to the bigger coastal towns!!
I dread to think how much debt we have now, as our same alcalde got voted back in this year. Nothing to do with the bus loads of strangers that arrived at the polls on voting day.
You would just not believe the things that have been going on in Spain!! The Euro will tumble, mark my words.
Just as well Spain kept the peseta on its official documents. Even today, a bus ticket, or shop receipt, puts the price in pesetas as well as euros.I guess all corrospondence will end up in the dead letter office or being cremated
