    Some say that the term Indigo Children is a 'concept' that people use as an excuse for misbehaving, pyschotic children (or children with other mental illnesses) - what do you think?

      I saw them in concert once, and own one of their albums.

      No, wait, that's the Indigo Girls. Sorry.

      Indigo children is new age hogwash. Many of the primary characteristics of those termed "indigo children" could be found in almost any kid. The boundaries are too vague and the characteristics too general.

        That's what they said about them damn hippies and their new age health nut stuff, too.  So now the corporate 'pig' gentlemen farmers have taken over our health and I say feed them high doses of the chemicals they feed us, the stuff they claim is harmless in such small doses.  IMO, if it destroys the nervous systems of insects thereby killing them, it's more than I want accumulating in my system.

      The characteristics of indigo children has certainly evolved since its conception. The medium at the time made no specific mention of the characteristics that I can remember except that it mentioned they will be more in tune spiritually with who they really are and will not easily conform to societies model of what we are supposed to be.

    Indigo children are an interesting concept, but my worry is that labels like these could cause a form of 'spiritual apartheid'.  I have also read about rainbow children and crystal children, all seemingly more highly spiritually advanced than before and leagues ahead of us mere ordinary humans.

    We haven't yet fully overcome prejudice when it comes to colour of skin, gender, sexuality etc so we don't need to get into 'my child is an indigo and yours isn't' territory.

    I think that it becomes dangerous when "indigo children" are not treated for their  issues in order to maintain their "uniqueness".  I have no doubts that some of these children show spectacular gifts (both of my children who are/were on the spectrum excelled in certain areas to the point it was almost scary), but I see it more as a savantism.  Even savants need to have their weaknesses addressed.

    I have never seen a child that was Indigo in colour? That would be really cool tho! big_smile

    Seriously, I have heard the term many times but don't know what the heck it actually means! yikes

        How young do we have to be to join that group.  I wanta be one!

             Maybe I woulda been one of these except my Grand Pa refused this concept; …  just before he   kicked me in the ars sending me flying ten feet away.  I then had a superman complex.  But that didn’t last long. Two leaps from the barn roof dispelled that notion.
        Now I don’t know what I am.  There has to be a word for it!

    No, I don't believe in Indigo Children or even the concept of them.  Buy my best friend, a Reiki Master, has been telling me for years that my oldest daughter may possibly be an Indigo Child as she manifests all the classic Indigo traits.  She's beautiful, brilliant, talented, and excels at almost everything she does, but she's also frustrating and impossible. She has always let everyone know what her needs were and her major objective in life seems to be getting what she wants, regardless of the consequences. She's self-important, self-absorbed, has problems accepting or respecting any authority, and is impatient with those around her that she feels are beneath her. Her attitude of entitlement and superiority is nauseating. According to her therapist, she's got ADHD and ODD, which makes her infuriating, but in no way special and certainly not Indigo, since there is no such thing except in the imagination of people who most likely can't except the reality that their kids have some behavioral issues and would rather delude themselves into believing their childrens' anti-social behavior makes them somehow superior.

        She's 21 now, but she's been a holy terror that would not be ignored since the minute she was born and there is nothing to be done about it.  I used to blame her attitude on her father, he was impossible with a bad temper as well as an anti-social attitude.  But it soon became clear that she wasn't just a brat, she was an intelligent, gifted, brat with a high IQ and an "in-your-face" attitude.

          Jeff Berndtposted 12 years agoin reply to this

          She may be intelligent, but that doesn't mean she's not a brat. My kid is wicked smart, too (we had him tested).

          We didn't tell him the results of the test other than "You're very smart."
          We also told him, "You may be a very smart kid, but you still have to clean your room and eat your vegetables."

      I'm all for a good smack upside the head, if it's necessary.  However, I've never spanked my children.  Unfortunately, these days someone will call the cops on you for spanking your kids and you'll end up in jail, or on Good Morning America.

    I'm pretty sure I know an Indigo adult. He

    * hates authority
    * believes he is superior to just about everyone else
    * thinks rules don't apply to him
    * thinks he's always right
    * is extremely self-centered

    I'm working on a hub about this now, even as we speak.

      How about chemically laden food, highly processed and devoid of nutrition except for the molecularly bastardized version of nutrients which are put back into the food, pesticides, insecticides, fungicides, steroids, hormones, genetic modification...shall I continue?  The human body doesn't recognize this stuff as food.  It doesn't know what to do with it so it tries to adapt.  Enter A.D.D. and its counterparts, autism, cancer, diabetes, alzheimers and all the rest which were not remarkable 30-40 yrs. ago.  Throw all the electricity running around us into the mix and the cocktail is now bio-malevolent.

        Yes I can see how those chemicals can affect the body in ways we have no idea about.

    Hmm, this is a new category or observation from my point of view.

    In some ways every child is 'like' their parent. In others ways children are just very individual. A certain percentage are identical twins. A large group of children are taller than their parents. So the process of categorization is possible for thousands of different components of 'being' but exactly what is the purpose of defining children who behave in this particular 'same way' into a category? Is there the thought that they are all somehow interrelated and is the categorization offering some specific advantage to the children?

      Perhaps the indigo label is shades of T. gondii infection. influence human culture?” Lafferty (Scientist) speculates that the personality profiles resulting from toxoplasmosis, with increased feminine qualities in women and more masculine ones in men, may explain “greater differentiation of sex roles” in countries with rigid gender norms. The relationship between toxoplasmosis and the common personality profiles of a population may explain some aspects of the “personality” of a culture, in particular gender roles and expectations.
      Toxo (T. gondii) is a parasite most people in the world are infectged with it. There is no cure. Almost all motorcycle riders are infected. T. gondii changes human behaviors. Men become risk-takers. Infected women are viewed as extremely attractive by infected men. In Brazil where the infection rate is over 95%, the women are known for this characteristic.
      Who knows, there may be more thaqn the indigo thing lurking behind the scences!

        You should write a hub about this as I have never heard of Toxo (T. gondii). Sounds like some strange stuff! And for so many to be infected yet it's not commonly known about, very strange stuff! smile

    After being told by several folks that one of my granddaughters is an indigo child, I did some research and began working on a hub about what I found. (I just published it.) Lexi has been tested and was found to be gifted, so she's in a special class at school. She used to have many of the characteristics of so-called indigo children, but she's outgrown most of them. Thank goodness! Does that mean she used to be an indigo child but now she isn't?? lol

    strange,.... children use to just be children,... no lables needed,... just children. i feel very sorry for the last 40 years children,(my generation) living with lables applied to them so that thier parents/caregivers might justify rampant bad behavior rather than contend with it. then the cycle is ontinued so yet another generation canbe even further from objective realty. and we wonder why todays kids get the blues?,... indigo?,... please.

    To:
    kirstenblog,
    I have written a book, "Eyes Wide Shut: An Enigma." It is a fictional book based upon actual events.
    I have written perhaps 5 - 10 HubPages about T. gondii. My website www. eyeswideshutanenigma dot com has extensive research references.  To comply with HubPage's policies, I will not pimp my research more than this...
    Some HubPages articles about T. gondii:
    http://dallas93444.hubpages.com/hub/T-G … Us-Have-It

    http://dallas93444.hubpages.com/hub/Why … Into-Water

    http://dallas93444.hubpages.com/hub/Wha … Do-With-It

    http://dallas93444.hubpages.com/hub/Wha … oplasmosis

    http://dallas93444.hubpages.com/hub/Wha … -Infection

    http://dallas93444.hubpages.com/hub/newbook  (Does Parasite Play Role in Schizophrenia Etiology?)

    There is more, but this will provide a foundation of understanding of the concerns of the public not being aware of most of us are infected with this parasite and how it changes our behaviors. There is recent research that indicates a cause and effect with brain cancer with T. gondii...

    Hope this helps. I have written the Wall Street Journal Awqrd-winning editor about my research.... Also a local newspaper in Bakersfield, California.

      I will have to check your links out when I get a few spare moments. Been really busy of late with the holiday run up but it will be fun to have some interesting reads when I need a chill out moment to engage my brain. I am currently doing very tedious work that takes very little brain power, just a lot of repetition.
