American liberals like to point to European as the great liberal success story. They especially love Sweden because they think Sweden is socialist and has always been socialist and always will be socialist. But is Swedish "socialism" really that much smarter than America's spastic and silly liberalism?

I guess we should hear from a Swede. We heard enough from the Americans!
Many Swedes have spoken. As has part of the UK press.

Really UCV you aren't so naive that you believe a right wing commentator in a right wing newspaper would have anything positive to say about the left wing are you?
the ultimate showing that centralization and socialism don't work is nothing more than history.
EU - debtor's prison
US - debtor's prison
Social democracy (Swedish or German style) is just about the rarest kind of political system because it is so difficult to achieve the degree of social cohesion needed to make it work.
Basically rich and poor have to sign up to a common vision and power has to be spread widely. Would that appeal in the US or UK? I am guessing not.
their total population is low
their economic system is unique which is highly geared towards high tech exports which makes the government rich and in return gives back to the people (in the form of comprehensive welfare coverage)
There is high literacy rate because of free education up to tertiary level. It is the best place for single mothers to live and that is why marriage is very low and there is high solo living arrangement. Who needs a partner when you can get it all from the government except love of course, hehehe
So I believe that the economy which is capable of sustaining their very advanced comprehensive welfare system which makes people liberal
I was disappointed by that article. I thought it would be a comprehensive theoretical analysis based on political philosophy.
Some guy in a wheelchair? Really? Haha. As if any system is 100% perfect ALL the time. Tell you what, he eventually got that wheelchair. If that was a story about an American battling with big health insurance companies or something, it would have ended with "Mr. so-and-so continues to try to get by without the wheelchair, and he and his wife are waiting for a response from the government agency/ business."
Anyway, the proof is in the pudding. The "socialist" countries of northern Europe enjoy high economic growth rates, long healthy lives, good public education, safety and security, a very low level of inequality, and generally among the highest quality of life human beings have ever experienced on this planet.
They accomplish this through a combination of socialist and capitalist elements. Facts are facts.
Nothing and nobody is perfect. Would be very dull if it were.
For me, not Swedish, not American, but familiar with both societies and economies, for me the article in question is misleading.
UCV, what do you want to express? Swedish "socialist" system is bad?
While i am not sure of how socialist Sweden really is, there is certainly one dominant fact about Swedish society and that is a fairly just and equal distribution of income.
While the GDP per capita of the US and Sweden may be alike, this fair distribution of income makes it more pleasant to live in Sweden than in the US. At least that is my personal impression.
Sweden has a very successful system. The key to its success? The people would want it. That's it! Any country can form a socialist democracy but the people must demand it from its leaders and work together.

<snipped - no promotional links, please>You have to admit when it comes to liberalism it's very much like a religious fanatism where they worship at the alter of bureaucracy and believe in one all powerful central authority! It's laughable! If only libs actuall believed in science!

I have been in many controversial political discussions on hub pages. I consider myself a centerist. I believe we need both some components of socialism to provide the things that we can't do as individuals and some componets of capitalism, but not enfettered capitalism. It seems that...
