Okay, with the whole franchise reaching it's end soon in 2012, I want to know your thoughts on this franchise?  Explain the phenomenon that is Twilight to me, and tell me exactly why you think it'll either go down in cinematic history as one of the greatest love stories told....OR..you can tell me why you think it's arguably the most over rated love story ever told.  Please explain your answer.  For those wanting to know what I thought, then you'll just have to read my hubs to know the answer to that, as I'm not saying anything about it here.  wink  lol  Besides, this is where you guys can talk about it anyway. smile

I will state first and foremost, I don't like Twilight. I've only seen one movie and that was more than enough; the books interest me even less. To me the phenomenon is just a result of a generation coming of age needing something to be fixated on. For my generation it was teen pop and TRL, Harry Potter, and other things. It's just a sign of the times. Teens and tweens want something to share and be interested in together just like every other generation.

Young, goodlooking hotties, ilicit implied sexual atmosphere, building on the popularity of vampires and dark themes.

It's popular because people are in to necrophilia and bestiality? No, I really have no idea. All I know is that my 16 year old sister thinks the werewolf kid is the greatest thing since sliced bread.

One phenomena attached to the most recent Twilight movie is people going into convulsions during the intense birthing scene. Young folks have grown up with vampires on TV and in the culture. Back in the 50s teenagers went wild over films like " I Was a Teenage Werewolf" for example. Vampires, Werewolfs, fantasy, and immortality spiced up with romance makes for alot of fans..

Maybe it's because these Vampires seem more romantic looking as they don't show much or any fangs (I can't remember anyhoo!??) and they sparkle in the sun light which is sort of like an ad for some new make up also sort of like an extended ad for make up.

The phenomenon could be more focused on teenage girls who who are more than likely the target audience for such movies as Twilight. I thought these movies were ok, but not really vampire movies really, they seem like they are labelled vampires but not proper vamps.....

The tv series Vampire Diaries does a better job of weaving in unpredictable story telling with it's own interpretation of it's mythology...again based on a book, but more preferable to Twilight.

Seems to me that they made vampires into pussies.  Sorry but whoever heard of a vegan vampire anyway? And what would a 100 yr old vampire want to go to high school for?  Sparkle?  I think in the case of Edward Cullen, LeStat and Tinkle Bell had a one night stand.

It's not a phenomenon to me or people like me but.. It was built towards a young crowd not ready for the cruelness of the world and the "reality" of vampires and their true terrifying nature. These innocent people get a taste of the edgy, mixed with pixel perfect people who relate to them in the most minimalistic way possible, relationship goings on wise mostly.

I say skip it, whatever age you are don't waste your time and skip it. Watch Tru Blood, the Underworld series, fright night, interview with a vampire, 30 Days of Night, Vampire hunter D, ANY of the vampire flick classics, etc. You get the true unrelenting terror vampires bring along with better stories and romance more engaging and intriguing. Why would you not want that?

As I hate it with a passion I have to give it some credit. When people watch these Twilight movies I can only hope it urges the viewers to delve deeper in true vampire lore. An understanding and an urge to watch BETTER vampire movies like the ones stated above is what I hope happens to people who watch it. I hate you Twilight, but thank you....... *cringes*

My sixteen year old and all her bffs just love the Twilight Saga, or maybe it's just Taylor Lautner.

Well it is mostly boring and a lot of bad acting by young self centred actors that fail to intrigue me. Another few hundred more vampire movies and maybe the blood will get sucked out of it. Until then sprinkle some garlic on it and throw a stake in it.

I was wondering what all the hype was about too. About 20 years ago I read a lot of Anne Rice, who wrote about Lestat the Vampire, and did a long series on the Talbot Witches. I didn't think anyone could top her writing skills, the books were always well written, fascinating, and gave the characters depth, even though they were vampires. I considered the Twilight series, but it seemed aimed at teens. Then I learned adults were reading it. So I guess everyone has their own level of expectations from what they choose to read.

Well, for me, it's pretty simple: Twilight is aimed toward teenagers; It presents vampires in a completely different point of view. Vampires are usually presented as cold, seductive and vicious creatures. But in here, some (the Cullens) are good, humble and... "Vegans"(?), while the bad guys are pretty much presented the traditional way, with the exception of no fangs and sparkles. Which, in fact, angers most "Traditional Vampire" fans outside the Twilight fanbase.

Most pre-teens and some teenagers haven't really seen a "real" Vampire movie, like Dracula, Queen of the Dammed or even Interview with the Vampire. Some adults has been interested about how the author presented these mythical creatures. Some of the phenomenon was brought by these curious people and die-hard fans, but I believe that haters really turned it up a notch after the release of "New Moon".

I'll admit it, I read all four books from the Saga and the only one I liked was Eclipse.

Still, I'm not a fan of it; I've read books that were truly well-written in first-person and developed much better in terms of characters and plot. What I didn't liked about it is how the characters were developed in the (Twilight) saga.

All of them (Twilight characters) are very "static" to me. There is no dynamic between any of them, they stay the same (even though Jacob turns into a shapeshifter and Bella into a vampire) in terms of personality. They don't change much, and some of them are even very negative and can give terrible influence in real life; like Bella for instance. I mean, if you look at it like it was real, who would want to leave a family because you love someone who has hurt you in the past? It's like looking an attitude of low self-esteem, confidence and almost "battered".

The film adaptations are dreadful at best; Acting was the worst, Script following right behind it.

Wow... long post. It's no wonder I'm a little bored. tongue

I read the first book thinking that it would be similar to Harry Potter (which I absolutely loved).  Let me know tell you that I was extremely disappointed.  I thought the story was terrible.  It was one of the worst plots I've ever heard of.  There was no character development and ultimately no message that I took from it.  It was essentially the biggest waste of time I've ever endured.  It was simply 300 or whatever pages of the narrator saying how "hot" Edward was.  No thank you.  I continue to be astounded by the series' success.
