   Don't you just love it when someone buys a $400 camera--- and a case for it, on your Amazon account?  I do. I love it every time it happens, even though it has only happened once. It was not even a selling hub-- I don't think. At least I have never written about cameras.

      I need a new camera (mines smashed to smithereens, which is why I have no images of my own on hubs) However, I was thinking more along the lines of used, ebay.

      As a new Amazon Associate, can someone please explain exactly how it benefits me when someone else buys an unrelated item from Amazon using my hub link - in dollars and cents? (especially $400 cameras).  Thanks guys.

         Anyone can buy anything from your hubs and it's not a requirement to be related to what your hub's content is.
         
         And how much you are paid is based on your level of commission on the product or is preset by Amazon.

         As I understand it (and surely someone will correct me, if otherwise) People click on an Amazon ad that appears on your site (maybe it works for  adsense too -- see how knowlegeable I am?). Your ad is for muffin tins or rat poison which the clicker is mildly interested in.
         While they are still on the site, which they entered from your ad-- they get totally distracted and click on $400 cameras which they have been craving for quite awhile. So instead of buying the muffin tin or rat poison, they think "Hey, that looks like the camera I have been craving" and they push the buy button.
         They got there through your ad link-- you get the credit.
         It happens.

            Yes Rochelle, you are correct. The timing of the cookie is what matters. If the person purchases while visiting via one of a hubber's links, then they get credit for the sale.

               Yes-- I know it seems totally odd and that is one reason I picked those two. The other reason is that I have actually had these things advertised on my hubs. NOT in the same hub, mind you, that would just be WRONG on so many levels !

   I wont. Although I'm sure I've read that this can be done through anothers affiliate code. Think I will contact HP, if it can be done then why give the commission to someone outside HP.

         Do you have a reference for that? -- not that I doubt you, I like verification.
         I know you do NOT click your own ads.... but how do they know you don't have another HP (or other) account?

            This was brought up plenty of times before. Just don't make a habit of shopping from the same hubber. Otherwise, Amazon might consider you family/relative and not allow commission to that particular affiliate. But, Amazon cannot stop someone from shopping on an affiliate's link. Secondly, if you want to avoid detection, don't do it while logged into your Hubpages account.
            This is IP question. Google probably monitors IP address of it's affiliates/publishers.

   Once upon a time, much to my extreme surprise, on another site where I write someone bought a Segway that got credited to my Amazon account.  And it didn't get returned.  The purchase had absolutely nothing to do with what I was writing about.  I have no idea what they decided to look at or click on that got them started but I like how they decided to go shopping.

            Stranger things have happened. I'm thinking about when I was non hubber, internet shopper. You honestly would not believe how one click leads to another. When I start thinking about buying something I have to justify to myself for ages, then I set amount that I'm prepared to pay, no higher. If I then see that product, and I not only want but need it, I'll buy when the price is right.

   On my other account, I have a hub for an expensive toy that I wrote last year. Last month, someone bought it for $450, this month another person bought it for $280.
   
   Gotta love the Xmas season. I need to get started on next year's xmas hubs soon so they have time to age.
