If Time is a dimension then why isn't Consciousness?

The Spatial Dimensions are WHERE THINGS HAPPEN.
    Time is WHERE THINGS HAPPEN.
Consciousness is also WHERE THINGS HAPPEN.
    Just sayin.

      Who says it isn't?

Time is quantifiable and has a direction with respect to a reference point just like the other three known dimensions height, width, and depth. Consciousness does not have either of these qualities. Consciousness is awareness only and is just a state of our mind.

Consciousness isn't dimensional because it exists outside the confines of time/space. No spatial relationship.

Energy also isn't defined by dimension.

Consciousness is our awareness that we are a living being. When we die our consciousness ceases as well because it is the result of all the electrochemical and biochemical reactions occurring in our brain. The white light people claim they see during  near death experience is the brain shutting down because of its chemical processes are slowly coming to an end.

Dust stays here, water stays here. Consciousness could survive, much like a radio wave survives, in the realms of energy. Check into Noetics. Consciousness could be a state of energy.

Actually, consciousness has no energy attached to it and isn't energy in itself. Which is why it ceases at brain death.

Indeed. It is more like a collection of chemicals and membranes, which fall afoul of entropy when life ceases.

      *****************************

A dimension is the measurement of movement.
The movement that we as humans are aware of is

          Up and down or Height
          Back and forth or Length
          Side to side or Width

By this definition, physically we live in a three dimensional world.

You probably need to use Hamiltonian equations that use the sum of all the potential and kinetic energy in a closed system, like the brain. smile

Well, most references to the 'Four Dimensional Space-Time Continuum' don't include a fifth dimension.

No, a dimension is a continuum expressing expansion in space and time.  Consciousness is awareness of self that is implicated located in one point in all four dimensions.

Many religious people have to believe that consciousness is more than what it is.  Without that belief, there is no possibility of the silly life after death they hope for.

That's why they'll never accept reality on this subject.  They can't.

Yes, anyone who makes the claim that consciousness exists or continues to exist after brain death, just doesn't understand consciousness.

But, but, where does the light go when you snuff out a candle...?

Where does the light go when you DON'T snuff out a candle?  That's another way to ask the same question.

Well, actually, I believe less in life after death than I do re-cycling or re-combining elements which are already incapsulated in this universe. If something is said to simply de-exist, then that, in itself is a scientific impossibility. What doesn't stay here, still exists in a different form, such as the released energy of a log after it has been fully consumed. When a star goes nova, what it was has merely changed form. Your brain waves, the act of thinking produces measurable energetic "signals" which we call brain waves. This energy doesn't simply cease to exist, nor, can it. I didn't make this up. It's science, whether you believe it or not. Have a nice day:)

Your brain waves are no more "consciousness" than the radio waves emitted by your computer are a spreadsheet.

      That isn't "science" - it's uninformed nonsense.

What we call "brainwaves" are charged ions moving through cell membranes.  All that stuff eventually becomes other stuff. Experience of person hood does not go along with it.

I'll add that consciousness isn't something that goes along for the ride either.

Excuse me. I used to do EEG's and you are mistaken. Just what makes those sguiggly lines your Dr. always steps back and says "Hmmmm!" about? It is this very fact which is being used to attempt to create the next generation of computational devices. Brain waves produce energy. Measurable amounts of it.

      1. Cagsil profile image70
Cagsilposted 12 years agoin reply to this

And in brain death, it no longer produces energy. Meaning, that energy is transformed into something not measurable.

          And your point?

          1. Cagsil profile image70
Cagsilposted 12 years agoin reply to this

Since it's transformed into something that isn't measurable, there's no experience, memory or consciousness. It doesn't go with it...all CEASE to exist.

So does your computer.  But those waves are not capable of doing computing tasks, are they?

      3. psycheskinner profile image83
psycheskinnerposted 12 years agoin reply to this

Yeah, me too. In a research setting I was that Dr.  That's why I know what the brain waves are, and it ain't electrons. It is "ionic current".  Charged ions separated by a cell wall membrane. It is "energy" produced by ions in solution separated by membranes--not some disembodied magical force that can float off into the aether.
