Just wanted to share this about Google Authorship

   Today, for the very first time, I did a Google search and found one of my pages on page one with - wait for it - with my smiling face sitting beside it!
   
   I have NEVER seen this before except famous people so this really surprised me.  As I am about as insignificant as you can get in the blogosphere, this may indicate that Google authorship is starting to work and everyone may start seeing this soon.
   
   I'll try to paste the picture in - hope you can make out my handsome mug!
   
   
   
   I hope this doesn't get seen as a promotional link.  I think it is very exciting for all of us.

         I just tried another  search for a different subject and there it was again.
         
         I did a search that turned up a hubpages page of mine though and no picture :-(
         
         That makes no sense..

         Surely if they've any sense, Google would be more convinced by copies of my passport, birth certificate, household bills etc., rather than by a photo which could be of absolutely anyone.
         
         I really, really hate this trend towards "encouraging" you to use your real pic online. By "encouraging" I really mean "compelling", but we're not supposed to come out and say that, are we?

            I don't agree with you, but it's simple enough:  you want Google to link your stuff, you need a Google profile that they will accept.
            
            I see people using cartoon characters and non-facial images at G+.  Whether theywill get away with that for long remains to be seen.
            
            You do not HAVE to be part of Google authorship.

               Mine's been showing up with my stuff since I first posted the picture and set up the profile with Google.
               
               I wasn't at all comfortable with the idea of putting an "identifiable" picture up (and I've turned down quite few opportunities because of my reticence/discomfort with having a picture on the Internet).  I didn't want to be excluded from any benefits of the "authorship thing", though; and after being online for several years, I really have come to realize that the impersonal element of no-picture has (at least for me when I first run into other people's stuff) gone from just being impersonal to wondering if the person is a complete phony.    If you're on a site long enough you don't always have that thing about not trusting that someone's who/what they say they are because you kind of get a reading on their consistency (and other things).  It's different if you just run into an isolated article on the Internet.
               
               Besides having some remnants of childhood shyness that I couldn't overcome (only when it comes to public exposure), I was concerned that someone could just lift a whole head-shot and make a phony ID with it.  My approach to dealing with that was to mess up the color a little and only have the part-face picture.
               
               Apparently (or at least for now), it's considered acceptable enough for Google.  If they ever do what so many writing sites do, which is absolutely require a professional head-shot to post online, then my stuff will have to go without any picture next to it.   I probably wouldn't put a real picture on a site where what I posted didn't have the same "personal flavor" to it that the stuff I put on here has.  With the personal-flavor writing, I think there's something to be said for letting readers know I'm not a 80-year-old guy or a 20-year-old young woman, pretending to be something I'm not.  I'm sure there are probably some unintended consequences I haven't noticed yet; but for now, I'm all in favor of the establishing-authorship thing for a number of different reasons.

      No, you don't apply.  You just need a Google Profile and the right links there and here.  See Glen Stok's excellent hub on that subject.

         I did it, Pcunix!!!  Glenn Stok's hub is awesome.. I was able to follow it.   I was so thrilled when I tested it using the link in Glen's hub, and it worked.  So, thanks, if you didn't post this I would have not done it.

      Yes, as far as I've seen.  I suppose there's the chance all my Hubs don't have it, but it's definitely been showing up on those I've noticed.  It sure seems to be there on all of them from what I've noticed, but I can't be certain.
