      Basically SMO stands for social media optimization. In this process we promote our product or business by social media sites with the help of different techniques. Social media optimization is related to search engine marketing, but differs in several ways, primarily the focus on driving traffic from sources other than search engines, though improved search ranking is also a benefit of successful SMO.

   SMO is the process optimizing a site so that awareness and content are easily spread through social networks and online communities. This includes adding 'like' buttons and 'tweet this' buttons etc. It also includes such things like adding a forum that encourages conversation and interaction (like this one) and blogs.
   
   Anderson's description refers to Social Media Marketing (SMM). The two are often confused.

   SMO (Social Media Optimization)is the interaction within a social media site and the share of information. It is how many businesses create and then manage their image by sharing information, interacting within Networks. What we are doing right now answering this question in a forum is SMO. It refers to the networking advantages within a site to spread information/content/opinion on sites such as Facebook/Twitter/LinkedIn/YouTube/Tumbler. You gain relevance by creating polls, asking questions, posting, commenting, liking which as an overall concept assists with SMM Practices as well as SEO. SMO is a way to create Viral Marketing. It also is the practice used to create more relevant B2C relationships. It is more than Building a Brand Awareness...it is about building and maintaining relationships through Online Interaction.
   
   Example- You Have a Facebook Account with an RSS Feed from Hubpages to your Blog, which joins the content from here with your blog without getting zapped for copied content, you gain more visitors to your hubs from people reading your blog due to the display created from the RSS Feed....You just shared content- increased your relevance by sharing and gave access to others who would share the content. You can also do this by integration of a LIKE/ G+/ Twitter/ StumbleUpon or Share Button.

         An RSS feed allows your work to be syndicated automatically on another site. It provides your summary and the metadata from one location on the web to another.
         What this means is; If I have my own personal website and I wanted to show my new postings to hubpages on MY website without risking 'copied content', i would place the RSS feed on my website, so my website viewers can easily see the summary of each new hubpage posting and click on the feed(summary) and be (linked to) brought to my hubpage posting, so that they may read the full post(hub). It is just another doorway into my hubpages, but also benefits my website in the sense that it provides more options of relevant content. Does this help- or did I completely confuse you?

            Lol the first sentence confused me. I honestly have to thank you very much for putting it in "Layman's terms". Definately caught on to that part of. Sometimes it's the terms that is confusing- I am a visual learner and not many people explain things in writing very well to visual learners. Once again - Much appreciated.

               lol, no problem. I know exactly what you mean. I tend to over explain many things for visual learners, but end up offended the not so visual learners in doing so. I have a few hubs that talk about SEO- keywords and back-linking, if you need anymore step by step explanations on the subject matter. I'm in a position in which I teach companies how to manage their Social Media and Optimize for Search Engines, so explaining in "Layman's Terms" is kinda what I do best, lol. Glad I could help, even if it was just a bit
