i've often toyed with the idea of dreading my hair...
what are your opinions on how girls look with dreadlocks?

You should dread that kind of locks.

You have to wear them with confidence to look and feel fabulous. The women that walk and wear the locks with pride will always look better that the ones hiding neglected dreads that are only in their hair because they thought is was easy to care for.

Wear them as if a Queen would wear her crown and you will be fine. But make sure you have someone that knows what they are doing start them for you. Enjoy the journey! Blessings

I personally got dreads in a Grateful Dead accident (No lie, I will tell you the story some time) People who take care of them can look truly fabulous. They do need care however and when you want them gone it all has to go. That being said, make sure to find someone who knows what they are doing, before they touch your hair.

I'm trying to convince her to NOT do it. She has very beautiful hair and I would rather she didn't destroy it.

well i think it will go like this: grow my hair a little longer, get the rest of the dyed hair cut off and cut a pony tail off for locks-for-love and then dread it. i think dreading long hair would be DREADful. har har

I think you should look at pics of others who have hair like yours and maybe do a face over before yu decide. I'm not so sure dreads have the same WOW effect on whites. Not meant as a racial remark but it just looks different, kinda out of place. I think your hair would be beautiful if it was, not sure if it's the right word but, crinkle permed.

Good luck with your desicion Cole.

i do think its a pretty scary decision as one will never know how it may look after all. i think it could actually look pretty good as long as the dreads are just the right thickness.
THIS is why i've been thinking about it for about 3 years, and still have not done it!

They are ok if taken care of. So many that have them dont take care of them and they really have made a bad reputation for them. When you say dreadlocks I do not immediatly think of people who take care of them I think of the ones that dont.

dreads are fine as long as they are done correctly and taken care of very well...
I have had them before, lol..even dyed a few purple and a few red...luckily I did take good care of them and did not have them for long, and was able to have them "undone" without cuting off my hair, but it took over a day to unravel them and a ton of really good , heavy conditioning cream

You know, you're not helping here. I'm trying to talk her out of it. Not that she is seriously comtemplating it, as of yet.

If you continue to give her hope it might look go on her, then she more likely to try it.

The object is to STOP her from doing it. She has beautiful hair, and from reading her hubs, it's well taken care of.

So, someone stop this woman. lol lol lol lol lol

  11. Ivorwen profile image66

The biggest problem I can see with dreads in her hair is that they will be quite short, at least from the tails I have heard.

    1. Cagsil profile image70
Cagsilposted 14 years agoin reply to this

Yes, it is nice to see you too Ivorwen.

Yes, I'm sure the biggest problem is with length. But, she has really pretty hair and it would be a real shame to mess it up to the point of damaging it. smile

      1. double_frick profile image59
double_frickposted 14 years agoin reply to this

why thank you, Cagsil. i do take pretty good care of it, its a little overboard actually. but i think it[dreads] could be a good hairstyle for me. but, i will probably wait for a few years. actually WYCHIC's hair inspires me to just try to grow it out as long as i can.

honestly though, i used to have very short hair and my hair is so in the way. and putting it up pulls too much and hurts my scalp sometimes. which i know makes me less of a candidate for dreads, lol

*sigh* i wish i knew how it would look before getting them. i guess i'll just have to go with plan B. crazy incognito wigs. <3

Honestly being a hairdresser, I would go for hair extensions in favour of dreadlocks. I have seen so much hair loss and breakage with dreadlocks it is not funny, even by those who have taken care of them.
As they put tension upon the scalp, a proportion of those with hair loss is irreversible, meaning the hair will not grow back.
Plus I think this looks much more beautiful

        http://s2.hubimg.com/u/2305781_f496.jpg

        than this

        http://s4.hubimg.com/u/2307511_f248.jpg

But it is your choice lol. If you do get it done and you feel they are a little too tight or pulling on your scalp please go straight back to the hairdresser, they will have to be loosened. Good luck.

Dreadlocks take 3-4 months of really wacky hair to get going, esp if you do not have coarse hair that dreads quickly.  And then to change your hair, you have to cut all of it off.

I've tried a lot with my hair in my lifetime, but I'll pass on dreads myself.

YES YES YES!  wow, who knew this topic would be so controversial?  Cags is just getting more conservative by the day - I wouldn't listen to anything he says.

I know a bunch of people with dreads and they all look great - some who have such long dreads it is incredible.  I know nothing about how it is done, but I do know that they take more care than you would think.  One guy told me he spends about an hour a day "rolling" his locks to get them even and pretty - and they do look great.  If I could I would too - even though I have very grey hair - but I don't have nuf hair to dread!  extensions? I don't know.

Well, obviously the hair on my head will not suffice for dreadlocks, however, we could experiment with my nipple or but hair.  I may have enough for that.  Perhaps not.... sad

I think dread locks look dreadful. Maybe you could consider tiny braids instead....  smile
