Discontinue the HubPages Copy Checker Please!

   I know people will think I'm crazy, but I think it would be better if HubPages stopped offering us the copy checker (the process which creates those little red copyright symbols on our Statistics page).
   
   Several people have commented that it's "unreliable", and now we know why:  it's only run if you achieve a certain level of traffic.

   That could explains why some Hubbers were seeing the symbols at one time, but haven't seen one for ages - perhaps their traffic has dropped below the threshold?
   
   The thing is, when those little symbols start appearing, it lulls you into a false sense of security - you think your Hubs are being copy-checked.  But in fact, your Hubs have been checked this time, but there's no guarantee they'll be included in the batch next time. 
   
   In that sense, the feature does more harm than good - I think perhaps HubPages should remove it until such time (if ever) they decide it's economic to offer it to all Hubbers all the time.   Then we'd know where we stood!

      According to what Jason said yesterday in another thread only people with a certain amount of traffic gets it because it's expensive to maintain.
      
      So maybe it's the maintenance of it that creating the problem. My suggestion stands at charging a dollar each month for the service and offer it to all members and make sure it's maintained properly.
      
      I don't think it's fair that some members have the service and some don't

         That's right.  I can understand that HubPages can't afford to check everyone, and I agree with you:  it should be everyone or nothing. Not because it's unfair, but because there's no way a Hubber can be sure whether he's on the list or not.

            I agree, Marisa!  This kind of preferential treatment to certain members can only cause strife on HP, as both you and I have observed on other writing sites.  It only makes one wonder what else we are not being told.  But it's their show, no matter if we like it or not. So this is only my opinion.

   Jason didn't say it gets turned on and off.  He said it is used on higher traffic levels. 
   
   That MIGHT mean daily, weekly or monthly on and off, but it might not.
   
   I would certainly agree that if it is on, we should know it and vice versa.

      Perhaps if the views drop so low the checker is turned off.  You know, a money thing.  It's just business, you know.  See, that's how rumors get started.

      I wasn't saying it gets turned on and off.  Jason said it is run only on Hub accounts which get high traffic levels.  And as I posted above, that could mean your Hubs are included in the check for months, then if your traffic falls, they're not. 
      
      The checker is definitely not run daily, weekly, or even monthly.  I believe it's a fairly manual exercise and is only run occasionally.

   To me, the HubPages copy checker is to services like Copyscape as the HubPages stats are to Analytics.

      That's what I always thought, but now Jason tells us that it's not offered to everyone, only those with high traffic.
      
      That's OK for someone like yourself, Relache, who has consistently high traffic.  But what about people whose traffic drops?  Once upon a time, once you hit a certain traffic threshold and 'qualified' for the checker, you wouldn't lose it, because traffic always went up.  But these days with Panda, many Hubbers experience quite large fluctuations.
      
      Sally's Trove posted that she hadn't seen the symbol in ages, and I suspect she dropped below the threshold so her Hubs weren't being checked - but she had no way of knowing that.
      
      If we knew more details it would help, like:
      
      - what is the threshold?
      - once you get on the list, do you stay there, or will you be dropped if your traffic drops?

         If there is a traffic threshold, it's low, because I have those symbols and get very little traffic - it will be at least 6-8 weeks before I break 100k views!

   I am grateful to HubPages for the copy checker. But I don't find it accurate as many times I have found copies which were not mentioned on the Hub. So if HubPages can charge a Dollar or two as Cardisa mentioned and offer a better service it would be nice.
