I am thinking that if a hubber has left HP for whatever reason then there should be a shudown of that hubbers forums, questions and comments. Why have a forum running that the hubber initiated. If the forum was started by someone else and the just posted a thread, that's okay. But if the initiated the topic then close it to new replies.

If a hubber voluntarily left Hubpages they can delete their hubs. If they were permanently banned I am sure they can still request them to be deleted if it does not happen automatically.  The content remains theirs.

I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that HP owns all their content except for their hubs.

Close.  You own your forum posts, but HP has an irrevocable right to use them for as long and however they wish.  To me that means they own them as much as I do.

If you delete all comments and forum posts from some one leaving HP it would often make the threads and forums unintelligible.  The same can happen to comments in hubs - many of us reply to each comment - if the preceding comment is suddenly deleted it would very odd.

I think you took that to the extreme Wilderness. lol

I think Cardisa is talking about eliminating all the forum threads started by a hubber who has left. This would not delete all of the forums posts that hubber posted, but would delete the "threads" started by them.

It would certainly clean up the forum threads, that's for sure. However, there are a lot of hubbers who no long participate in the forums at all, but did at one time and their primary accounts have been gone also. But, that doesn't mean that they do not have another account active under a different name.

As for deleting/eliminating comments posted to hubs. No, that would be ridiculous.

You're probably right in that it was a little extreme.

Although, you know, who started a forum has very little to do with whether or not I read it or participate.  Does anyone really refuse to read a forum just because they don't like the hubber that started it?

I't not that one doesn't like the hubber. It's just that they are no longer a part of the community so what purpose does it serve to keep that forum open?

I was told directly by a hubber that when I post, they do not even bother to read my posts. Apparently, there are some hubbers who don't bother to read the posts of some others.

Secondly, there are some who only post to specific forum threads and nowhere else. I mean that with reference to the political and religious forum threads. Many hubbers who participate in those forums, don't participate in other threads. And, if those people are permanently banned for whatever reason, I don't see why their threads should stand the test of time, since they didn't.

So, in a way I agree with Cardisa and as a retort to Relache, that wasn't necessary. An "unperson"? Oh please. As far as giving the overworked staff something more to do? That's pure BS. It could be automatic and programmed into the forums software.

What is this, Orwell's 1984 where people get declared unpersons and all traces of them are then erased?  Just because someone leaves the site shouldn't have to mean their entire existence was a mistake and should be scourged from the site.

I don't think inventing busy work for the already busy admin and moderators is going to improve the site.  Besides the natural flow of the forums moves everything along eventually.

Agree with you here Cardisa. Got an e-mail from a hubber who wanted help getting followers. They wrote that their hubs had high scores. When I checked their site the hubs section was blank but up at the icon it showed they'd been on HP 2years with 12 hubs and 4 followers. How do they expect to get followers with no hubs showing? Must be something else so I left it alone.

Maybe their hubs were unpublished for reviewing. It's strange that they don't have their hubs showing. Maybe it's a glitch with their account.

Thanks Cardisa. Nah, believe its something else. Don't want to put a name but if you saw the site you'd probably agree.

Maybe the getting rid of the comments are a little extreme. My primary reason for this forum was the forums started by these hubbers.

I don't see it as a problem. HubPages is an open site, it's not some exclusive, elite club. Why make more work for moderators? I think they have enough work trying to keep the site clean of spammers, etc. I've noticed recently more threads about trying to create new rules, why?

I guess if you get a hubber who has made it their mission to 'Troll' or 'bait' on the forums, then then there is a good case for deleting their threads once they are gone. Seems to me no worse than deleting 'junk mail' from our inbox's!!

The content in a specific thread may be very useful and deleting it just because it was started by someone that left would delete helpful discussions from those of us that are still here. Who started a thread often bears no relation to the content that ends up within it and who posted within it.
Imagine if Darkside left, would we delete the hubchallenge link thread that he started with almost 10,000 posts and the associated links.

The threads do not cause any problem, they are there to be searched as a historical (some times hysterical) record of past problems and successes and are a useful resource if you are looking for the solution to something.

Should we delete the history books because the people mentioned within them are no longer with us?

Some of the forum threads get so long, I read a few posts, jump in to comment, and don't even notice who began it. The religious ones get pages long, and change in tone, getting off on tangents. So it becomes different as it goes along. It would just confuse things more to delete it just because someone left.

Whether on this occasion or not, I absolutely approve of anyone quoting anything at all from George Orwell's 1984, which should be compulsory reading IMO.

While there may be occasions where forum threads are started by trolls or ex-members, the closing of said thread should only happen when the following discussion becomes un-endable, as per forum rules.
