I feel stupid asking this but when people refer to using good "keywords" do they mean "tags"

Best of my knowledge both of them are the same.

In that case, you've still got a lot to learn!

Dungeonraider has explained what keywords are.  On HubPages, tags are an internal thing, used to determine what shows in the "related Hubs" section.  Tags on a blog or website are different again.

SEO is my only downfall on hubpages. It bores me. I enjoy writing, but that's it. If I knew about SEO I would have my own website. I know a hell of allot about the tech industry, the only things I don't is programming and SEO.

Clearly this is just a hobby for you then, you aren't interested in earning an income?

Not really no. A little bonus each week would be nice, however, I don't want this to be my full time job. I'm too social to be stuck in front of a computer 24/7

Actually I was replying to N Brathwaite, who said keywords were the same as tags (they're not).

I think most writers find SEO and self-promotion boring. You have to decide what you're here for.

If you're doing something for fun, you can choose to concentrate on the stuff you enjoy. If you're running a business, you must be prepared to do the boring stuff as well as the good stuff.

Maybe we should!  I'm a Scot originally and I'm considering moving back to the UK, because since my husband's parents passed away we have absolutely no family here in Oz.  I went back for a big holiday (and a family wedding) last year and it made me realize how much I missed them all. Going back to that climate is a thought though!

If your reader stays on your page to read the whole thing, and if then you have a nice vid for them to look at...then Google realizes these things, and ranks your page well because your visitors actually stayed on the page, which is an indication that they enjoyed it.

That's SEO right there - just make a highly enjoyable page, and if you can make it pretty to the eye too, gosh darn, you're in business!

All of that is good, providing your target readers can find the page in the first place.

I'd have mentioned backlinking, but I'm not sure that that's needed so much on this site in a lot of situations.

If you're writing about Acai Berry, or Obama - then I surely hope you're doing some tremendous backlinking....

When discussing online writing, keywords refers to the words people will use to search for your article on search engines, like Google.  Once you've learned what people are most likely to type in to match your article to their reason for searching, you'll be able to write the articles incorporating keywords in your title and content.

Check out melbel's hubs, she probably has something more detailed on this.

The most important keywords there days are the ones right in the title and text of the hub, not the separate "tags".

I think SEO is fun! I need to write a hub on it or at least a summary on my website as to why. I like the (fairly) short-term results and seeing how visitors reached one of my hubs or sites.

In the early part of my career, I wrote and voiced radio spots for a non-profit. We would do giveaways on the radio with a 800#! Remember those? It was gratifying to have the calls come in from responses to our spots.

I think of SEO the same way ... it's like leaving clues for readers to find you.

I'm with you, Don - it's a fun challenge!  I still have a lot to learn, but I'm having fun playing around with it.

Interesting.  I view SEO more as trying to teach the SE algorithm that searchers looking for these words or terms belong on my hub.

Plus, of course, learning what terms searchers use to find the information I'm presenting.

Like you, too, I find it interesting.  I very often end up using keywords that I would not have considered in conjunction with my chosen topic.

I posted a detailed Hub titled "What is SEO?" that won a HubNugget award on December 28.  I think you'll find some useful information there, especially about keywords.  You don't have to learn a great deal about SEO, but I think you need to know the basics so people can find your Hubs through search engines.  It won't take much time to learn and most people find it interesting, especially when they are writing online.  The 'tags' used are Hubpages are keywords for the internal search engine on Hubpages only.  Keywords, as a term used in SEO, refers to search queries people are "Googling" and are most often phrases, not just single words.
