   A new bill introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives would allow law enforcement officials to shut down websites that enable or facilitate copyright infringement, leading some digital rights groups to suggest that YouTube, Twitter and online news sites could be targeted.
   
   Representative Lamar Smith, a Texas Republican and chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, introduced the Stop Online Piracy Act Wednesday, along with a bipartisan group of 11 co-sponsors. The bill would allow the U.S. Department of Justice to seek court orders to block U.S. access to foreign websites accused of infringing copyright.
   
   The bill would also allow copyright holders to seek court orders to block the allegedly infringing sites if efforts to get online advertising networks and payment processors to stop doing business with the sites failed.

   Just a way to allow the government to control the internet.  Would it be fair if HP was shut down and charged along with Google with copyright infringement because someone copied and pasted someone else's work on to their site?

      HubPages isn't a foreign site. It's a U.S. based company, therefore it's website is also.

         Websites operated for the purpose of infringement or having "only limited purpose or use other than" infringement would be targeted, as would sites that engage in, enable or facilitate infringement, according to language in the bill. The bill would also make it a crime, with a five-year prison term, to stream Web content without permission, in some cases, and it reenforces a process that U.S. agencies are now using to shut down U.S. websites accused of infringing copyright.
         
         
         
         "Anyone who writes about, or links to, a site suspected of infringement could also become a target of government action."

               So anyone can go to their competitor site and leave a comment etc to a copyright infringed site and that site gets banned - WOW WHAT A FANTASTIC IDEA YOUR HOUSE HAS COME UP WITH

   Another thing to consider. HP has users from all over the globe.  If their links on their hubs lead to "foreign" websites that are guilty, does HP and Google get the whack?

   The internet is filled with copyright infringements. Even though Youtube has developed ways to filter it out there are still millions of videos that got through the hole. There is no way to stop people copying stuff.

   Why should this BS concern us.... really? 
   
   Clearly someone is taking the Unemployment issue seriously and proposing another poorly thought through idea for gaining jobs for 1000s of welfare recipients!
   
   Obviously, a few thousand of the market entre-prune-their-arials may well have to move over to provide a better class of prisoners within the system.. but in Texas the monopoly for manufacturing Pink Tent Gear is well established and slipped through Anti-Trust legislation years ago!
   
   Or Was this considered as an opportunity to provide some further 'stable' work for the returning troops who are currently being withdrawn from deployment throughout the World... Where foreigners urgently required the US Government representatives to formulate a Viable Plan and Supervise the Immediate (With Force if need be) implementation of Democratic Rights of Free Speech and Expression!!!! ??? 
   
   I'm pretty sure that WikiLeaks issue is a bit larger than the not-so-Clever politicians need to SHUT US ALL UP!!  OMG... Transparency Viva Transparency!

         Factually, I AM quite well informed in MY foreign world.. which I hope allows me the ability to see a larger picture than many less informed others! Much of the 'current' technology has been developed by Kiwis! (Including certain Chips!)

      So who's for this bill, according to you?  The capitalists or the socialists? 
      
      I'm a capitalist who doesn't want this bill because I could be out of quite a bit of income if this bill gets passed.  I might be able to keep my job designing T-shirts, and my personal web sites might stay up because I control what goes up there, but if sites like Hubpages shut down, that's most of my money.
      
      Why would the socialists want it?  Don't they believe in free information sharing?

   I thought Hubpages were pretty good already at killing duplicate copy!
   In other words, why would they be seen as a threat to copyright?
   I would have thought that most people would be glad to not have their work copied and profited from by others.
