   US president Barack Obama used his last state of the union speech before the November election to paint himself as the champion of the middle class, by demanding higher taxes for millionaires and tight reins on Wall Street.
   
   Taking advantage of the huge national platform of his annual speech to Congress, Mr Obama defiantly defended his record after three years in office and laid blame for many of the country's woes at the feet of banks and an out-of-touch Congress.
   
   He proposed sweeping changes in the tax code and new remedies for the US housing crisis as he made the case for reducing income inequality in America.
   
   While the biggest proposals in Mr Obama's election-year speech are considered unlikely to gain traction in a divided Congress, the White House believes the president can tap into voters' resentment over the financial industry's abuses and Washington's dysfunction.
   
   But even as he called for a "return to American values of fair play and shared responsibility," Mr Obama seemed to take no blame on himself for a fragile economy and high unemployment that could trip up his re-election bid.

      This speech was a deflection of the miserable performance of his first term painting the hope for a future on the canvas. Obama speaks of American values but fails to define them specfically. He speaks of new direction but never says where we are heading. He shows no concern for debt or spending and that reality is truly troubling and disturbing.  It should be to all taxpayers and Americans. WB

         Yes, he did.  He wants to raise taxes on the super wealthy and put new fees on banks.  He wants to streamline, but he doesn't want to gut important programs and he should not.
         
         Ten times smarter than the Republicans in this area.  I just wish he were more aggressive.

      As for government, every leader thinks about people before the first election. When a person get elected to be the chief he starting to get to know things around the office. By the time he knows everything, he wants to get something for himself and the family. By this time a time-frame of about 2 years passes. The third year he gets a little piece of the pie for himself... The upcoming year he starts to think about reelection because it was very little piece of the pie he got.
      And when do people come?...

   I fail to see how stealing money from rich people and wasting it through government helps the middle class.
   
   Foodstamps, minimum wage, public housing, these all hurt the poor.
   
   Forcing people to buy health insurance - this is just a waste of money.
   
   Bombing brown people... this just makes people hate us.

   Much like his campaign speeches of 2008... I'll believe it when I see it.. As for today, none of his promises have made me any better.

   If 30% on a billion dollars is too much to contribute to a country that provided them ALL the breaks.....why don't they move?
   
   Cause you know Romney always says if you don't like his ideas, you could go to Cuba or N Korea.
   
   So, why don't these unpatriots go to Dubai with Cheney?
   
   And Obama most certainly did include himself to pay more! He specifically said he himself.
   
   Good one. Take money used for Iraq invasion, pay down the debt, build up America.
   
   STOP the ridiculous tax breaks for the rich: 60% of the deficit goes away. Right move.
   
   Moving troops out of Afghanistan. Good.
   
   Jobs for vets...excellent.
   
   Stop the stupid bickering: not possible. The ABO's will never stop.

   ....guess the R's need to bone up on their arithmetic!
   
   Obama knows how to add.
