Yes because I believe that Adam is a literary device to represent the wider human community that existed at the time. As humans have evolved from an ancestor common with chimps, he has long had a belly button.

I don't believe the A&E account was ever intended to be interpreted as a literal account by the Hebrews, but was an allegory, a poem, a representation of an event that occurred in distant folklore which was embellished in order to communicate moral and spiritual ideas.

We are told that God cannot "Lie". We are told that the Holy Bible contains the "Word of God" Therefore the stories in the Bible are truths. It is also truth that some stories in the Bible are prophetic, prophecies from God. Some are already fulfilled as proven through historically reported events, others are yet to be.

Even if something is the truth, it does not necessarily mean that the truth must be interpreted literally. After all, Jesus parables often make no sense at all if interpreted literally. Like the parables, the creation account is likely to be allegory interpreted against 4000 year old cultural references, which are foreign to a 21st century mindset. To even get close to the meaning of Genesis, we cannot read it with this Western mindset; we must at least read a Jewish commentary on the account. Even then, after 4000 years many of the cultural references may be lost.
