Musical Hubbers?

I was watching TV the other night and saw a show that said, "People who play an instrument are more likely to excell academically than people who don't play anything at all."

I thought, "excelling academically is basically another term for 'smart'."

So when I thought of smart, I thought of Hubbers!

Which leads me to my questions...

Do you play an instrument? If so, what do you play? What is your favorite piece of music to play?

I play trumpet, and my favorite piece of music to play is the Zanzibar trumpet solo by Freddie Hubbard.

    Your turn!

The flute, piccolo and the baritone sax. As far as pieces I love to play; Greensleeves Rhapsody on flute and piccolo and as far as the sax I love all the pieces I've played because its a dominant background instrument in jazz.

I play drums:  snare, set (well, used to, I had to sell mine), and hand drums.  I also sort of play piano, and play harmonica.  I used to play handbells until my wrists gave out.

My favorite type of music to play on drums is orchestra accompaniment.  When I was in college, I'd accompany the choir on various pieces, on snare and cymbals mostly.

I have written a few songs, just the basic tune and words, but nothing major.  Well, I wrote the words to the school song for my elementary school when I was in third grade, but other than that nothing that has been published.  wink

Well, I play at the guitar. big_smile I use it to relax, so my 'favorite' is everything on the favorites list of my MP3 player, a little bit of everything.

I wouldn't exactly refer to myself as a musician, per se, but I love to play around on the guitar for my own pleasure.

I can fake many rock songs quite well - good enough for a campfire, anyhow.

Used to play the violin in high school. I loved playing "Winter" by Vivaldi

If trying to "write" music on the PC counts, I do that now and again - actually finished one composition with my mother (she wrote the lyrics and I put the music and computer singer to it)

Yes I honestly do. I have a beautiful grand piano sitting behind me. My grandfather was a pianist who played in the US for a living, he jammed with Louie Armstrong, and many other great legends when he was alive. We all have followed his footsteps. smile smile smile

    practice this one AE

    I dont wanna talk
About the things weve gone through
    Though its hurting me
    Now its history
    Ive played all my cards
And thats what youve done too
    Nothing more to say
    No more ace to play

    The winner takes it all
    The loser standing small
    Beside the victory
    Thats her destiny

    I was in your arms
    Thinking I belonged there
    I figured it made sense
    Building me a fence
    Building me a home
    Thinking Id be strong there
    But I was a fool
    Playing by the rules

The gods may throw a dice
Their minds as cold as ice
    And someone way down here
    Loses someone dear
    The winner takes it all
    The loser has to fall
    Its simple and its plain
    Why should I complain.

But tell me does she kiss
Like I used to kiss you?
    Does it feel the same
    When she calls your name?
    Somewhere deep inside
You must know I miss you
    But what can I say
    Rules must be obeyed

    The judges will decide
    The likes of me abide
    Spectators of the show
    Always staying low
    The game is on again
    A lover or a friend
A big thing or a small
    The winner takes it all

    I dont wanna talk
If it makes you feel sad
    And I understand
Youve come to shake my hand
    I apologize
If it makes you feel bad
    Seeing me so tense
    No self-confidence
    But you see
    The winner takes it all
    The winner takes it all......

My mother is a part-time professional singer (it's bloody badly paid, though!). She also plays the piano. All 4 of us learned the piano, and one of my sisters and I learned the violin, my other sister the flute, and my brother the trombone.

Haven't touched one in years but I played classical guitar and self-taught keyboard.

At one stage my little brother was learning how to play the clarinet and he'd try to play along with me when I took my guitar out.  It usually sounded like classical guitar accompanied by a dying donkey.  When he broke his clarinet it was the best thing that could happen to music.

I've been playing guitar since about 1980 (had one years experience 29 times)and started playing banjo a couple of years ago. I can just about do a pretty mean "Duelling Banjos :-) )

I also enjoy percussion, and play taiko and the djembe drum.

You probably haven't heard of Taiko.
This is a Japanese art form  which is a combination of percussion, dance, and martial arts. It certainly is good to keep you fit!

I play with a Taiko group in Hobart. Here's a clip of some of our group performing at a recent Taiko festival in Melbourne. After the kids intro section, the precision you'll see is fairly awesome.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CroFOrm88RM

This is a free form jam session from workshop I attended a little while ago. (No, you won't see me drumming - I took the film :-)
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Uc1dvFIg50

I hope you can see why Taiko is somewhat addictive. (We build our drums out of wine barrels, after we drink the contents)
    Cheers,
    Eric G.
