I really cannot see this ending well...

A Dutch Muslim politician has called for a ban on dogs in The Hague, the third-largest city in the Netherlands.
Islamic legal tradition holds that dogs are "unclean" animals, and some say the call to ban them in Holland and elsewhere represents an attempted encroachment of Islamic Sharia law in Europe.
This latest canine controversy -- which the Dutch public has greeted with a mix of amusement and outrage -- follows dozens of other Muslim-vs-dog-related incidents in Europe. Critics say it reflects the growing assertiveness of Muslims in Europe as they attempt to impose Islamic legal and religious norms on European society.

I hope this is not attempted here in the US.

Stories like this make me want to have 100s of dogs and take them out walking.

This doesn't surprise me in the slightest. However, given that freedom of speech is no longer an option in countries such as mine - the UK - and that these individuals are granted more rights than the indiginents, I will let my "PA" take this question...

This happens whenever a religious group is given the power to impose their ways on others. Whether it is the Christian right imposing book bans, anti abortion laws, sexual behavior restrictions, or the Muslims restricting what a woman can wear, what pet I can have, etc. It is just extremism. Average Muslims, Christians, Wiccans, Budhists, etc. simply go on with their lives. Dogmatic extremists are dangerous to our freedom, we're seeing it everywhere.

I agree with Gramon1 (see his post above).

I am a Muslim and I have always kept dogs, just like many other Muslims. Arab Muslims love Salukis, Turkish Muslims have Kangals (Anatolian Shepherd Dogs) and Akbash Dog, and Pakistani Muslims are crazy about their Bully Kutta. I have written a hub on the position of dog according to Islamic tradition and many Muslim scholars advocate keeping dogs as pets.

Thank you for posting this smile

A little bit less hysteria, and a little bit more fact would go a long way to alleviate the world's problems.

After the initial post went up, I looked up Google (as I suspect most of us do) and found sites about Muslims who hate dogs and want rid of them in Spain (where I live) and in other places.

I also read how dogs are considered 'unclean' in your religion, but if we are all perfectly honest here, dogs are manky!

They are disgusting! They not only sniff shit on the streets, sometimes they eat it too. Then they come home and want to lick your face! I don't think so!

They put their mucky paws on clean furniture and drop hairs everywhere.

But, you know we keep dogs in spite of all those things, because dogs are friendly wee things. They love you even when you feel everyone else hates you. They wag their tails in happiness if you so much as look at them, they are so desperate to please.

And they are totally dependent on us to feed them and look after them, and will defend us with their lives if necessary.

That asides, they are always something to kick when we are angry (just joking!!)

The point is, the world is one now when we can all openly communicate online, and not have to listen to the intermediates that spoke for all of us before, the Media.

Thankyou for posting that you keep, and like, dogs too. smile

It is not just the Dutch Muslim community. American "religions" also espouse similar nonsense.

Orthodox Latter Day Saints - and I am talking Texan compounds being raided by child services OLDS - also believe that animals are unclean and should not be kept for pets.

My former stepfather was the son of an OLDS "Prophet" here in Australia and he forced my mother to give up our family dog.

Luckily Mum eventually stood up to the unsayable here or I will be banned, and went to the shelter to reclaim the dog.

When I was in Saudi Arabia I only ever saw ONE dog.. In fact I saw more bacon sandwiches than I did dogs - thanks to my brother in-law for smuggling bacon in cans of fruit!!

Will we also be seeing them getting the local supermarkets to ban the sale of pork and delicious delightful bacon??

Besides, they are followers of Salafi Islam, a minority and a rigid School of thought that has a nerrow and totally dated version of religion. People known to belong to this group - Al Kaida, Talibans, etc.
