Just a thought, Since i know the Romans were into Crucifixion as well as the Carthaginians. Although Hanging criminals and being sentenced to the arena's for sport were also practiced if a person was condemned to die.  I would like to know what people would think if this were true.

It's idolatry... Jesus is an idol, God is an idol, the cross is an idol. There is no reason to say rope could not be an idol, to those that would worship the condemned.

I don't see the Cross as a symbol of divinity.  Christians don't worship it. (Well, maybe some do, but I don't).  It's not divine and has no power within itself, but the One who hung on the Cross is divine and has all the power.   It's simply a reminder, or a symbol, yes, of the suffering our Savior went through.

And short answer to your question----We'll never know, will we?!

Hmm, i completely agree. Its not really the cross that holds meaning, but The man on the cross that is what matters.

Christ , was not hung . He was crucified , on a cross , therefor a cross is the devine symbol . however , the cross is not what is worshiped , its Jesus and the price he paid to clense our sins , no matter how Christ dead , its not how it happened its what he did that matters .

I've asked myself the same question a couple of times, or something like it. I guess that might very well be the case. It's a good thing Jesus wasn't crucified by a Bond villain or a convoluted Rube Goldberg death machine might be the most prominent symbol of our faith. Not easy to carve for a pendant.

Although it might be easier to convert people if Christians had sharks with freakin' laser beams on their heads emblazoned on their bumpers.
