Do you fear Freedom of Speech is being threatened across the globe?

Obama has used the Espionage Act, passed under Woodrow Wilson to shut down media opposition WWI, 6 times in 3 years, whilst it had been used 3 times since 1917, to target or shut down journalists that Obama targeted. In Syria journalists were killed and Obama praised their tough journalistic style, yet when that style is applied to investigate the Obama administration the President invokes the Espionage Act.

Similarly in Russia, with Putin returning to power and running for office yet AGAIN, 40 journalists, which were working on investigative pieces on Putin's political corruption, have mysteriously been found dead.

The reason Freedom of Speech is so important especially when it comes from the media is that if your government believes they can intimidate, imprison or even kill a journalist they disagree with then it would be absurd to believe that the government will not target individuals. After all, the Obama Administration has passed National Defense Authorization Act which permits the government to arrest and detain in perpetuity ANY American the government believes to be a threat.

    Hmmm, really?

Well how about Helen Thomas, Rick Sanchez and  Pat Buchanan? Remember when Bill Maher was fired?

All these people lost their jobs for an opionion.

    Like that you mean?

And the NDAA I hope will do its job on that creep who wrote that Mossad should assasinate Obama...don't you?

You'd better hope the NDAA works: your God-King signed it!

Why would I want NDAA to work....I'm against it. And Obama is no God-King except in his own mind...he is more akin to a Boy-Man and even man is too strong a term for Obama.

The alleged Mossad issue did not require the passage of NDAA. So NDAA is irrelevant and does nothing but strip away free speech. And YES, just like Juan Williams, Buchanan and the rest...When I'm speaking of freedom of speech obviously someone, anyone, being fired or arrested for saying something someone else doesn't agree with is troubling.

More troubling, because they are telling the truth!

Please be clearer. What is more troubling? Who is telling the truth? Prove what truth is being told? I know that someone wrote asked the question. It is no big deal...there is something called free speech. And I did not see anyone get their panties in a bunch when people called for killing Bush. Not one person was ever arrested for threatening or writing about killing Bush.

WEll--that one needs researching, because I know for a fact, Cindy Sheehan was arrested at a Bush speech for wearing a t-shirt which had the number of dead American soldiers on it....arrested, handcuffed, brought to the station.

Also know of 2 men who were arrested for an anti-Bush bumper-sticker.

Reporter was just arrested yesterday for sitting in a doorway at the Romney speech.

And let's not even go to the techniques the police are using on OWS.

Dissent was not allowed during Bushco....I will have look that statement up.

Perhaps there is something called Trespass that still exist in America...You know -- "property rights". Plus you are confusing a Bush sign promoting Assassination versus some local cop pulling someone over for an offensive bumper sticker...Next thing you will be arguing "I'm rubber you're glue" so  lets cut the nano BS.

I asked a simple question about "you fearing your free speech rights being infringed on by the government?" YES or NO. If you believe that the government is not a threat fine --- clearly state your argument as to why the government is so wonderful. This is NOT a f**king left/right BS issue. If you have read anything I've written you will know that I consider Bush a socialist and threat to American freedom due to some of his policies such as the "Patriot Act", Homeland Security agency and creation of the TSA.

I DO NOT CARE about your Obama/Bush BS. This is about freedom and the American Constitution not your trivial simple minded little political beliefs. I'm a conservative, that believes in God and Constitution but I do not attend church. I'm a capitalist which means I believe in small limited government period. This is not rocket science. Bush and Obama are simply different sides of the same coin. The difference is Bush was on a slow path to destruction and Obama bought tickets for a bullet train to economic destruction.

Bull. Obama is trying to stop it.

You conservatives said nothing while these policies were being implemented....beginning with Total Information Awareness Network in 2002. We are dealing with the results of your 8 years of conserv governing. It IS a left/right issue.

Government to me is good when D's are running it...bad when it's the R's.

It's that simple. And OBVIOUSLY--you R's feel the same way on your side!

As all you have done since 09 is work to get the D's out!

Here's a bunch of people who were arrested for protesting Bush: violating the "free speech zone" set up by Ashcroft.--and this is just protesting! Compare that to the morons who bring guns to Obama events!

    Just came across this:

"The mandatory military custody requirement does not apply to American citizens. A separate provision the defense bill contains a compromise that allows the courts to decide in the future if American terrorism suspects captured in the US can be subject to indefinite military detention without trial. However, the Senate Judiciary Committee is taking up a bill Wednesday that would resolve the issue by making it absolutely clear that Americans captured in the US cannot be denied the right to a fair trial by their own government. How many votes in the Senate has the Constitution?"

YES NDAA applies to American citizens, because the law fails to EXCLUDE Americans. Perhaps most Americans, and apparently including yourself, have a utopian view of lawyers in the American justice. I had a friend that was a State Supreme Court judge and he told me: "if you are seeking truth and justice in courtroom, you are looking in the wrong place."

You claim Americans have a right to trial, which is correct but there is nothing to ensure that it is fair or just. In addition, the same government you place so much faith in is the same government that "assassinated" an American on foreign soil because they feared him. Think about that -- your government was afraid of ONE man because of the WORDS HE SPOKE. And you have faith in these people not to violate your constitutional rights -- why?

And I do NOT care what Congress passes, the fact that this was initially passed is indicative of a government's excessive seizure of power. Besides, the "law" is not a definitive thing...it requires human assumptions and interpretation and many laws can be manipulated to suit a particular need or outcome.

I can't explain it to you except by saying this: Factions of world "gangs"...(don't know what else to call them?) are challenging each other.

I happen to believe that Obama is in a "good gang".

Not telling anyone else to believe it, don't really know why I believe it....I just do. And have since he came on the scene.

I think in matter of freedom of speech, the last Bush administration won the laurels. It is easier when the president's administration gets along with the lobbies to make decisions impacting our freedom. I wonder what will happen if the interests are diverging. I guess Obama has to make concessions! My problem is why?
In which way are you considering that our media bring us information, that if information it is, it is unbiased? When voices shout against their mainstream, they shut them down from FOX to CNN!

Say what you mean. So tell genius -- how does pointing out the failures of another person justify similar or worse failures of someone else. Bush passing the unconstitutional socialist/communist style Patriot Act and TSA does not legitimize Obama's nefarious unconstitutional and felonious activities such as: Obamacare (unconstitutional), using the IRS to audit Tea Parties in an effort to suppress free speech "against" Obama (nefarious felony), and selling and running an international gun operation to make it appear that American weapons were ending up killing people internationally, thereby allowing Obama to pass legislation restricting the second Amendment (felony), passing NDAA (unconstitutional), infringing on freedom of religion (unconstitutional)....so stop b**ching like a little Obama.

"The Guardian reports that Baroness Jenny Tonge, a Liberal Democrat peer, was filmed making this remarks during a student panel last week.

"One day, the United States of America will get sick of giving £70 billion [$112 billion] a year to Israel to support what I call America's aircraft carrier in the Middle East – that is Israel. One day, the American people are going to say to the Israel lobby in the USA: enough is enough."

Multiple sources are today reporting that Tonge has resigned from the Liberal Democrats today after video of her remarks prompted politicians to call for the party's leader, Nick Clegg, to take disciplinary action against Tonge.

"No place in politics for those who question existence of the state of Israel. Nick Clegg must condemn Jenny Tonge's remark & demand apology," Ed Miliband tweeted."

    yes--freedom of speech is threatened!

This is a good debate because the freedoms which have been taken away since 9/11 will effect what you can do as a citizen in your own country.  It is good there are those who recognize the problem the big question is what's to be done about?

This country is so different than what it was 40 years that it is nearly unrecognizable. When a government is passing on average 52 laws per year whereupon there are now over 4,500 laws and then over 300,000 regulations enforcing those laws which compose 80,000 pages in just laws and regulations passed in one year. This country would be far better off eliminating nearly all the laws passed since 1965 and then restructuring the catastrophic legislation passed by those two progressive socialists Woodrow Wilson and FDR.

Frankly I agree Lions Den Media this isn't the same country and there are those who are suppose to be representing the people but they are working against the people eroding the people's rights.

Having read both Lions Den Media and lovemychris you two strike me as capable leads to influence others to take up the fight for freedom in America again for as one document I just finished watch about author Naomi Wolf clearly pointing out how America has been losed based on the very points brought out here at this hub.  It is going to take a fight to get back the rights lost because they in government aren't likely to just give them back.

Keep up fight guys for it is your future.

Georgia Law Would Outlaw Picketing; Make Sit-Downs A Felony http://gocl.me/wASE8T

Congress passed something similar monday?(tuesday?)....will look it up.

    http://www.thenewamerican.com/usnews/co … -liberties

BUT, on reading it, it seems to be necessary at times. For example, those recent threat letters with white powder in them...that cannot be taken lightly.

And if people are threatening a ceo, that cannot be allowed either. However, peaceful protest....where does that fit in??

Georgia Law Making Sit-Downs A Felony

I can get behind the actions of the police regarding the actions of the protesters in the park since plenty of time and information-(warnings) were provided.

The idea of making it a felony for protesting  even in the form of Sit-Down is a bad move.  It is citizen's right to protest as Mrs. Wolf pointed out it's not only American citizens right to protest against it's government by the constitution it is our Duty to protest against a government which is not working for the people.  We tend to forget that this government is the People's government Not The policians government.

What about down the road when America is faced "Heaven forbid" with another Vietnam and our sons and daughters are dying away from home for no good reason we can't express to the people in charge I objection to their actions??
