Congress should get rid of oil subsidies. Not only should we get rid of oil subsidies, we should tax it more. Let's all write to our senators and congressmen to get rid of oil subsidies and tax oil more and subsidize alternate fuels.
Most sensible thing you've said in a while!
It's a shame nobody has seen fit to respond to this thread, it has the potential for an interesting debate, especially since the OP who on other threads declares for the free market and against socialism and yet here seems to be arguing for the opposite.
Maybe the OP's seriousness is in question?
Oh absolutely, that's how I read it. That she thought getting rid of oil subsidies was a bad move.
Oops - now that I've seen C.S.'s profile I realize I wasn't getting the sarcasm . . . funny how the far right only seems to make sense when being sarcastic.
Oh, totally agree - just surprised that Obama has finally found the balls to do it. Guess we'll see if it all comes to pass. Of course, this will give the oil companies the perfect reason to jack prices, though. Has government ever regulated the oil industry (like the airline industry)? Have been wondering this for awhile but can't find the answer on google (ok, I didn't look really, really hard . . .)
It's always cracked me up how the GOP practically becomes apoplectic about all those welfare mothers cheating the system but completely ignores that Big Oil gets billions in subsidies they have admitted to Congress they don't really need . . . not to mention the billions given to fraudulent Wall Street firms . . . not to mention the even more billions that some huge corporations don't pay in taxes.
So, it's bad to subsidize the auto industry but good to subsidize the oil industry?
I think we should definitely tax oil companies at a higher rate. After all, there is no way they would raise their prices to make up the lost profit, which would mean the government would really just be raising taxes on average Americans.

How do we make sure this doesn't happen again you ask? Deregulate further and open more of the gulf to drilling. That could only makes sense to those in the oil companies back pockets.

Should America take oil and gas subsidies and apply them to alternative power and fuel resources? Why American stubbornly continues to support a fossil fuel industry that is swimming in money from inflated fuel prices is a confounding issue.

Why are US taxpayers paying for billions of dollars in subsidies to oil companies?Big Oil says that if this form of corporate welfare ended that Americans will pay more at the pump - as if Martian taxpayers pay it instead of you and me - including the bike riders who don't own cars!
