How to Purchase Home Lighting

   In rehabbing one of our homes, I must ask IF we should be asking our electrician to purchase our lights? Should we buy online? Why or why not? Please share your stories.If you are an electrician please tell us the inside deal.

      Hi,
      I did a complete home renovation, gutted the whole house and built it back up. For the lighting we went to three lighting stores. The last place,  I found what I was looking for. Something elegant and something that would be a classic look for years. I ended up having to sell the house. I had an antique appraiser come to the house to see the collection I had. One of the first things he asked was, "Do you want to sell that chandelier"?   I think seeing your lighting in person is more helpful than online. A store also helps you see all the variety available. In doing that you can get a better idea of what will fit into your home and what your tastes are.
      I wouldn't ask your electrician to purchase your lights unless they know your tastes well and you trust them enough that they see your vision of what you want in your home.

   Don't ask your electrician (like me) to buy the lights.  You can get a better price yourself with a little time, watching the sales.  You might visit a specialty lighting store and see what is available beyond Home Depot - lighting can make a huge difference in a room and become not just lighting but a major part of the decor.
   
   However, do buy the lights ASAP - if mounting is any different it can affect the rough in of light boxes.  This is very often a problem on the major commercial jobs I work on - a few lights mount differently and we don't always know about it.

   Buy your own!  You'll save at least 50% in most cases.  But do as wilderness suggests, especially if they are custom or specialty light fixtures.

   We are renovating our home right now. I want to buy my own but have found that I am very uneducated when it comes to what different lighting does. In that case, I want a professional to at least advise me.
