Greek pensioner commits suicide sparking riots

   The suicide rate is shooting up in Greece as more and more ordinary people are being put under intolerable pressure by the austerity cuts.  It's important to realise that the term 'Greek Bailout' means that the government and the banks are the ones being bailed out and the Greek people will have to go on paying for many years for the failures of their government, the EU and the European banking system.
   
   Greece needs to default, return to the drachma and start charting their own destiny once more

   It is awful- makes the cuts we are sufferring seem mininmal, although we are not out of the woods yet by a long chalk

      We could make a lot of our public services much more efficient and cut costs considerably in this country before we even had to cut any front-line services.  But of course the bloated bureaucracies are not going to vote themselves out of jobs or lose any of their perks and expenses.
      
      But how can it be anything but cruel to slash a pensioner's income like that.  To have paid towards your pension all your life and then have it cut was bad enough for that poor Greek man, but then where was he supposed to make up the income if he could no longer work?

         It's really a sad situation for Greece and its people. With unemployment climbing to a whooping 60%, cuts in salaries and pensions, and tax increase, people are literally struggling. Once middle class families are now searching through garbage just to find a little food for their starving families. As for the retirees such as the ex-pharmacy owner who shot himself in public, how are they suppose to survive?

   I live in Greece and this latest suicide which was committed in public (whereas most of the economic related suicides in the last two years have not been reported as they occur in homes)in an attempt to shake the Greek people out of their apathy. Greece is literally dying and it's people have been shocked into just standing still and watching it's slow death. Only a revolution in the way Greece is run and a complete change of the old guard and the old values of corruption and back handers will save Greece now.

      The road to recovery seems long and rocky for Greece! How much worse can this get? I know that this financial meltdown would have spread globally, but it appears as if it hit Greece especially hard! If no other country is willing to bail them out, I can hardly imagine Greece's fate!
