What's the point of Gay Parade ?

   Don't get me wrong but I'm really curious what's the point. I ask this question because last year there was a gay parade in the Croatian town of Split. And it was disaster for those who participated in it. Even some throw rocks,cursed and did a lots of crazy things. Now a year later they said that they'll make another parade in Split.
   So my question is why do the Gay parade provoke those who are against them. Why don't you choose another ''familiar'' city ?

      It's much easier to face the social stigma of being gay to the max when parading with hundreds of like afflicted individuals. It tend to  legitamizes the practise in the eyes of the participant. These parades do much more damage for the cause than good.

   Portland has one every year, and tho we aren't gay, my husband and I attend every year. Those ppl know how to have fun, and fun it is. I like the marching band who wears tee shirts saying, "I don't even march straight."

   Parades are about having fun.  I think objecting to that suggests you don;t really accept gay people in your community. 'You can be here but you have to be quite and hide' isn't acceptance.

      I don't promote hiding one's true self, but when the choice is either that or blocking the main streets of an entire city for a whole day, causing fights and promoting trouble in places that obviously are bad locations for such events...
      then I would gladly choose the former.

   Throwing stones and swearing just shows to those having the Gay pride parade that some of the people in the area they have chosen are ignorant and rude. If the parade doesn't keep being held there until it is accepted then it allows rude and ignorant people to believe that this sort of behaviour is acceptable.
   
   Would you stop having a christmas parade if the people who don't believe in christmas or christianity acted this way?. I think not, I believe you would be horrified at how people were acting and you would expect the authorities to arrest those who threw stones as this is dangerous and unacceptable behaviour.
   
   If people don't agree with the parade they have a choice to not attend it.
   
   Having a parade is not provoking anyone and those that say it is should ask themselves how they would feel if those that didn't agree with parades they like decided that having these were provoking everyone who has a differing belief system. This is ignorant thinking from ignorant small minded people.

   The first Pride parade is always difficult. If you're Croatian, you'll know the first Pride parade in Zagreb was full of violent thugs throwing things at the marchers, who just wanted to peacefully tell everyone they exist. With each subsequent year, the number of protesters diminished, and the number of parade participants grew.
   
   Split is less cosmopolitan than Zagreb and only had its first Pride parade this year. Next year will be better, but we owe a lot to the pioneers who braved a lot of abuse to show their neighbors that they exist and that they don't need to apologize for who they are.
