Really? I had this huge debate with a friend who was stubborn in his view that money matters the most in the world, at least today. Agree or disagree?

smile Yes, as another respondent noted: we would know the system as capitalism and it does involve making some people indebted and keeping a few people very rich and in control of wealth and natural income generating assets and land ownership. We would have to change how our economic systems function to reduce the importance of money and debt and to remove control over most people's lives by the wealthy. We are not even aware of control unless we lose our jobs, get very ill and can't pay for medical treatment, or have our homes or cars repossessed. At such times we realize that we are not really in control and how easily the plug can be pulled!

    Disagree.

I'm of the understanding that it's just misunderstood and people have been taught to not know it. wink

Agree to a point. It only matters if you need it to survive (as in U.S.) and are struggling to get it. Unless you're a landowner and can live off that land, If you have it (and I've been on both ends) you don't think a lot about needing it or how much it maintains the life of necessity. If you don't have it, you wonder every minute how you'll pay the bills so it governs your actions. You don't spend what you have, you're always looking for work that pays money.

Money is nothing more than a human invention. It's a tool to be used. Anyone reading anything into more than that, then they have bigger issues to deal with.

The important issue is that instant success--or a big cash win--makes people go crazy. That is because there is no physiological system that controls for great success. That is because for the first 6 million years of our species, we had to struggle just to get the next meal. There was no property, except a spear or club, maybe your clothes. So, when Americans built an economic system where your value is judged by your cash, we're all going to be a little crazy. That is why in the U.S. money makes your world go round. It's a pay-to-play cold-blooded place for so many of us.

It's called capitalism ( and no I'm not advocating any other system), and I don't think money in itself 'rules' but the one's that possess it in debt holdings. Debt holders rule the world because there is no more Matthew 6:12 Forgive us our debts... a Sabbatical Year cancels all debts  - that's why it's called a Jubilee year.

US owes $$$ to China >>> alters policy
NWO world bank austerity measures that destroy countries in order to 'service the debt'

      Historical notes:

Housing crisis resolved by sweeping dictator policies:
"According to Economist Martin Armstrong, the real reason Caesar was killed was Caesar drafted legislation where home owners only had to pay back half of their mortgage to the bankers because the housing values collapsed 50% "  http://wiki.answers.com/Q/What_happened … z1vJop4tw7

In 1203, King John cancelled all debt owed to Jewish lenders by kicking them out of the country in order to have the nobility mobilize with him for the next war. BTW  - if England was as rich as France/Spain - it wouldn't be the democracy it is today. The King had to ask for money which the nobility said OK - but under these conditions: limitation of absolute monarchy.

      The debt holders rule.

I've often thought it would be great if, just as a one time thing, all national debt would be cancelled in all countries. No one owes anything to anyone. We all start from the beginning.

It's not the money, it is the greed that is associated with the desires.

That theory has its place but there's also the need. It's not greedy to want to be able to pay rent and eat well but it takes money. So in this respect, money still rules us. Most of us are not free because we don't own our dwelling or land.

The "Lust for Power" rules the world, money is a tool for that acquisition.

You know, I have a friend who advises organizations about employee laws. He says that after a person has 10 people working under him or her, the power trip goes to the head and the person wants to rule like a dictator.

That just shows an underlying problem of everything known to society as a whole. It shows that very few people truly understand what character means and how it is suppose to be a part of living action.

Disagree, sort of. In a way it does today, but it doesn't have to. We could evolve into a world where the thing that was most important was everyone's happiness, which I believe would be awesome.

Yes, indeed. A world filled with happiness and joy would be a dream come true. smile

But as Cagsil said, 'The Lust for Power' is the actual culprit with money serving as a tool to meet the desired end. Of course, power and money have both corrupted our world way beyond recognition.

Cagsilposted 11 years agoin reply to this

I did not say what you're implying here. I just said "money" was misunderstood and followed that by it is to be considered only a tool.
Money doesn't corrupt. Poor character corrupts.

          1. silverstararrow profile image76
silverstararrowposted 11 years agoin reply to this

            Agreed.

Well, the greed for power and money corrupts, and that is essentially the sign of poor character.  In today's world, power is directly linked to money, unless you have the mettle or character traits to overrule the hold of wealth.

All this statement shows is that the person who uses greed in this manner doesn't understand greed.

I agree Cagsil--money isn't a living organism! It cannot think, eat, reproduce or die...people who hold the money are the ones who control the money! It's not even greed... it's the person with the greed! People are the problem!

            1. silverstararrow profile image76
silverstararrowposted 11 years agoin reply to this

Whether it be any character flaw, it is the people who possess it that are the problem. But greed is specific to individuals. Money isn't the only thing that people are greedy for. However, when greed becomes the driving force in your day to day life, that is when the situation deteriorates.

As I said, money is an entity that serves as motivation for those in power or who crave it.

Before money and capitalism evolved as it has to be a 'hands off bloodless power tool' for economic colonialism the greedy strong simply invaded a country and took control of the people and natural resources by force. Now the tool is indebtedness.

I agree with you Cagsil, to a point.  Money doesn't corrupt -- the fear of not having enough money is what can corrupt a person.  This fear comes from no trust in anything but self and that leads to poor character.

I thought about - What if out National Debt gets so out-of-hand that we can no longer afford to pay the Interest?  By only keeping three Government Programs such as Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid - plus having the Military - there is always the Barter & Trade System left to work with from years ago. It was a buying & selling system that worked - but with the State of the World today and the enormous markets - that would be a real trial process.
