Will The Real Rock Band Please Stand Up

   There is alot of bands out there that doesn't peak my interest and doesn't bring the ballsyness that I love in rock so here's my question
   
   What's missing in rock today

      Nothing's missing. There are probably more bands producing more music that is more easily available now than in any time in history. No matter what one's taste, there is a band or individual artist to suit your tastes.
      
      Perhaps a better question to ask would be "I like band XXX. What other bands do you think I might like?"

      today's rock bands don't pique my interest either, and maybe - just maybe - that thing missing is they lack emotion. i think most bands these days are just after the money and fame. at least that's how i see it.

         This is a good point that I didn't really say in my post before.  Many newer rock bands, at least the mainstream ones, lack emotion.

         I think it was always true that most bands seek money and fame. I've said elsewhere that we remember the good music from the past, and forget the bad. Look at the charts from, say, the early '70s. There was a lot of crap that was popular back then, too. (And I'm old enough to remember it!)
         
         I predict that in 20 years, Nicki Minaj willl only be remembered for her (his?) outrageous looks and not for music, whereas the Black Keys willl still be performing and still be relevant. There are plenty of great bands out there, but if you wait for them to come on the radio, you might be waiting a while.

   No I think it's the right question to ask because think about bands like nirvana,garbage,pearl jam and if u wanna go way back think about jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin and then look at foster the people which I kind of like but there no depth in their music but I'm not saying all bands don't have depth but like I said there's something missing

      Maybe there's something missing in a particular band, but overall I don't think anything's missing. Some bands have it, some don't. It could also be that early in their career, a band has yet to find its voice. Perhaps they'll get better with experience.

   A lot of modern rock (3 Days Grace, Hinder, Bush, Nickelback) is very poppy, as well as simplistic in a musical sense.  Many of these bands also sound nearly identical.  They are almost always marketed as hard rock when this couldn't be further from what they really sound like.  The lyrics are generally quite cliched, and there's really no variety within the songs.  Additionally, they are very overproduced.  There is little to no rawness in their sound.
   
   I think a lot of the simplicity in new rock bands stems from the grunge groups. However, the grunge bands were still quite raw and heavy.  They were also different from one another, and their songs were not monotonous.
   
   There is some good rock today, but one generally has to look past the mainstream artists.  When I listen to newer music it's usually in the metal genre, so I can't really give the best rock recommendations. 
   
   Of course, everything I've said is mainly opinion and there's really nothing wrong with liking modern rock.  I prefer rock bands from the 70s, 80s, and some from the 90s.  Keep in mind that I'm more into heavy metal (which, like rock, is also used as a label for lots of poppy bands) so my perspective might be very different from that of others.

   I agree with TheHeavyReview. Everything hinges on where you look, and how hard you do so. I was starting to feel like rock was turning into pop and selling out, then I realized that I was only listening to a certain amount/style of bands that were making me feel that way. I've since broadened my horizons, going into all generations and styles to see which ones give me that beautifully audible high.

      Same with me.. I do like Chickenfoot better than the re-formed Van Halen, but ireally like AC/DC, and their last effort was up to their standard. I made a comment the other day about the Traveling Wilburys, considered by me to be the last Supergroup...maybe that's what we need; another superband.
