      That may be true, but the Presiden't approach and Ryan are attempting to deal with the shortfall. But I don't Republicans, instinctively, and feel whatever they propose will more than likely adversely affect recipients in a way that the Obama plan would not.

      Yes, and we have only three months to get rid of the Republicans who stole the nation's treasury and who plan to steal some more. Medicare will only go broke if the Republicans break it.

         Xenonlit, The democrats had a super majority for the first two years of Obama( house and senate).  They has nearly a super majority for the last two years of Bush.

         Clinton 'balanced'(not really) his budget, by taking the 'profits' from SS/Medicare, and applying them toward the deficit. In other words, he spent SS/Medicare money on other things, stealing the money from the program.

            Some of what Medicare covers will be transferred to The Affordable Health Care Program, called Obama Care by republicans. The republicans are leaving out this fact in their propaganda style statements. Their plan is to end the new health care program and raise the cost of Medicare to the people who receive it. At the same time they plan to increase tax credits to the biggest business and the richest people in this country. This money totals billions every year. It is paid for out of the working class taxes and by borrowing it and adding it to the national debt. They claim that this "Trickle Down program will stimulate business. The fact is no business will ever increase production or hire any new employees during a shrinking market. There is no one to sell to. The whole Medicare will go broke in 12 years is a twisting of the facts by the republicans. When big business and the rich are making less money, the republicans make up for it by gifting them money that comes from everyone else's taxes and the national debt.

                        Medicare is in great financial difficulty, no doubt about it. The issue is what to do about it. The Dems say slow down unsustainable health care cost increases by measures provided in the Affordable Health Care Act and additional steps. The GOP says shift the burden of future cost increases to future Medicare eligibles (our children and grand children) and rely on competition among health insurance companies to hold costs down.

                           What is it, $40 trillion short of being sustainable over 75 years? It's a huge difficulty.
                           
                           The ACA probably isn't going to cut healthcare costs by much, if any. Politicians aren't discussing the actual reasons for high costs, so how do you expect them to fix it?

                              It won't be easy as long as the country is in thrall to the parasitic health care insurance companies, for profit health care (e.g., HCA) and ravenous pharmaceutical companies.

                  All of the statements of when Medicare will run out of money are based on what the federal government is receiving in tax income during a major recession. Expenditures will exceed income when income declines. The fact is the "Trickle Down effect only took more money from the working class and gave it to the rich as free money. We will be in a recession until the market recovers. That will only happen as existing products wear out as long as the republicans block market building programs in favor of gifting the rich more money. If that is the best the economy will do for the next 12 years, we are in super trouble. Increasing the cost of Medicare service from the elderly who need the services will not solve the problem. Oh maybe I am wrong More will die off sooner because they don't have the additional  money to pay and their deaths will cut the need for Medicare.

   What is needed is reforming health care, not Medicare. Medicare and Obama Care can help reform health care which is grossly inefficient and ineffective.

      I completely agree Ralph. The key is to reform the healthcare system and medicare, under the President, this is the plan. If we were to elect the Romney/Ryan team, they would eliminate medicare turning it into a voucher system that gives more money to private health insurance companies.
