No...sorry to say.  I do when I am in a room more than overnight, otherwise, no.

Yes of course. Do you know how hard they work, and for minimum wage?

    Leave a tip.

As long as the custom of tipping persists, they will continue to get minimum wages!

I do not see why their income should depend on charity.

I also do not see why I should be subjected to further expense when hotel rates are already so extortionate.

when did this start? at 4 or 5 start hotels?
I guess being in the 47% or 99% I am not used to that. Even other well-paid friends I know don't do this.

It is not very common in the States, I'll tell you that.

I have travelled a lot, and I will say that it is bad practice not to in Europe and Mexico. Kind of like we tip at restaurants and hair salons, they tip other services like cab rides and room service. In Mexico, they even left little envelopes labeled "Punta" in the rooms. In the States the maids (that I know of) don't expect a tip, but always appreciate it.

    Yes, always.

I see no reason to tip a guy who whistles for a cab or carried a bag 20 feet, and not a women on an even lower wage who breaks her back changing linens and cleaning toilets all day.

If the current system is unfair to me, why pass that on to the person who the system treats worst of all: the cleaner?

You make a great point - we can flag our own cabs (if we can elbow past the doorman trying to get a tip), and I don't mind taking my own bags to the room, especially on wheels.  But I'm not about to clean the bathroom or change the sheets.

I usually leave my tip at the end of a stay, but it occurs to me there might be different people on duty each day.  Gotta rethink that.

wow, you're right. I usually leave my tip at the end as well. Thanks for bringing that up.

I avoid bell/door staff, but they can be very pushy. I had one who made the cabbie give him the tip even though I hailed the cab myself!

You are kidding! That's pretty nervy!  Years ago, I had a bellhop chase me down after I'd already tipped him and badger me in front of others (intimidating me to give him another tip) - I 'reminded' him I'd tipped him already and he shut up and left me alone.

Of course, unless there is already a fine or repair bill for what I have done to the hotel room.

Yes. Always-regardless of how many stars the hotel has, or doesn't have for that matter.  I do agree, that hotel rates are steep--but they are also negotiable...

Sometimes I do. It depends if he/she  has done something for me like binging me a cup of tea in the hotel room and whether I´m in the mood to give a tip.
