If foreign policy is party about keeping peace, I think this poll is something worth pondering.

We are and have always been the "Worlds Melting Pot"   We took great honor in establishing our country and we should also now as well.  What makes us unique is also what makes us critiqued .  Other countries have looked to us for so much, and maybe we took on too much to try to satisfy .
However great we were as a nation , an no matter what has brought us down. We still are so fortunate to live in this country.
Now to answer this great question.....  yes it matters how others view us, as that is exactly how we will treated by them and if our great nation needs to ensure we are respected, honored and treated fairly.... then we shall keep the peace for the betterment of all people and be honorable, respectable and be fair to gain it. Although that never means to cave in to non honorable, disrespectful and unfair parties:)

Yes I strongly feel that it does matter how other countries view us. The US is the number one world power, both militarily and economically, so whatever the US does has an effect on the rest of the world, one way or the other. I am retired and live in Malaysia so I see this first hand. I have experienced some strong anti-American feelings since I have been living here. This has not come from Malaysians but from some of our European allies, mainly British expats. Most of the ill feelings are a carry over from the Bush years, but many of these people blame all of the world's problems on the US.
People here, both Malaysians and European expats, are following the US election very closely and heavily favor Obama over Romney. They view Romney as inexperienced and distrustful, much as the way George Bush was viewed. They feel that Obama is more willing to work with people from all over the world and is more respectful to other nationalities and cultures, whereas Romney appears to be more willing to force American values and views on the rest of the world.
One point that most Americans don't realize is that beside effecting Americans at home and foreigners, what the US government does also effects Americans living abroad.  Ordinary Americans living abroad have to deal with a great deal of paper work just to be able to maintain a bank account in order to pay their daily expenses. Not every American living abroad and having a bank account abroad is a millionaire. Another point effecting Americans living abroad is immigration policies. The reason I am living abroad is that American immigration policy does not allow me to sponsor my same sex partner, so that we may live together in the US. I also am denied Medicare, for which I paid into for many years, simply because I live abroad. So what America does effects far more people that what the average American thinks.

    Sooner,
Great minds (although mine's a bit slow, as I see you posted this thread awhile ago and I just went and sourced the graphic now).
I think it's helpful to actually show the chart, so I'm posting as an image.
How interesting that KENYA is the top country supporting Romney.
But I guess that doesn't prove anything. Why should Kenya support its native son (lol) when the SLC newspaper didn't endorse theirs.

Here's another interesting article about world reaction to the 3rd debate:
