We'd like to invite a Pakistani couple to our home for Thanksgiving. The problem is that they don't consume any animal products, and I can't think of anything on my menu that doesn't contain milk, cheese, eggs, chicken broth, butter, or some other animal product. Any ideas for vegan Thanksgiving-like entrees? Thanks in advance!

    P.S. Do vegans eat yeast?

      Hi,
Most vegans don't eat yeast.  Do they eat their own traditional food. You may want to try lentil loafs and check out Indian cooking. There  are lots of easy fun dishes from Pakistan such as Pakora. I am sure you can find recipes on Hubpages.

You can use ground flax seed as an egg substitute and coconut oil replaces butter in all of my baked goods due to a cow's milk allergy.  As stated below, alternative milks are very helpful.  We like the taste of almond or oat milk much better than the soy or others, and use it in all baked goods.

Lentil dahl is great stuff, easy to prepare and suits vegans. Soak lentils in water (red lentils don't need soaking) and then add an inch of peeled ginger, a cinammon stick and 2 bay leaves and cook in about 3 mugs of water for about 20 minutes or until soft. Leave until ready to use.
In a separate saucepan, fry up some spices, such as a teaspoon of fennel seeds, about 10 black peppercorns, some fennugreek seeds (methi) and any other spices you like or can get acess to, then add onion, garlic, mushrooms and any other vegetables you choose. Once all is cooked a fragrant, REMOVE the ginger, cinnamon and bay leaves from the lentils and mix both together and reheat.

Check with Dr. Joel Fuhrman's site.  My wife is vegan and she creates some delicious recipes.  No meat, no dairy, no bread or flour products.   Only fresh vegetables, fresh fruit, some nuts and seeds.

First off is the phone call. How fun. find out from your guests want and what they would most appreciate. Aren't we humans silly. Missing all the fun of doing it together. And if I know my Pakistani buddie, they want to bring something. Coordinate, feel the love and have a blast. Do not miss this opportunity to bond. Oh my goodness think of the fun of shopping together and learning. Friend we give thanks that day and only a little for the food, but extra serving for our friends. I wish I could be there.

You might want to try tofu. I think I was reading somewhere that tofu is some kind of bean curd and I think is some kind of vegetable protein.

You can use soy milk or almond milk instead of cows milk, and there are vegan margarines (We use Smart Balance - but check their label, not all of their varieties are vegan), so you can still make mashed potatoes. Use vegetable broth instead of chicken broth.  There is also vegan cheese.  Eggs seem like they would be required for baked goods, but we found that there are many things you don't really need eggs.  Here's a recipe for chocolate cake that we particularly like:

You can certainly ask the couple for ideas, or make it a potluck so they can bring their own dish as well.  I try to focus on dishes that are naturally vegan that have beans and vegetables.  I like rice and beans.

Another good milk alternative is hemp milk.  Also, don't forget to check the labels for *everything* you buy, to be sure it is vegan.  Stir fries and curries work well... (just make sure the sauces are vegan and you use non-animal product oils to fry everything up in) good luck!  Cooking without meat products of any kind is definitely a challenge, but it's one well worth undertaking.  If everyone in the world could go a couple of days a month without eating meat I think we as a planet would be much better off.

If you want to bake a cake, you can bake an egg less, butter less cake---substituting it with vegetable oil or sunflower oil. I generally add orange juice or grated carrot, if I am baking a vegan cake. Adding some cinnamon powder will add to the flavor.
You can make vegetable biryani---add lots of green peas, carrots, cabbage, cauliflower to fine rice.
Make vegetarian soup, with options like clear tomato, carrot soup, spinach soup, sweet corn in vegetable stock and so on.
    Happy cooking.

The vegans at our church eat a lot of soy that substitutes for meat. They even make "chicken" out of soy. There is also a recipe for bread that is make from a starter dough. The rolls made from it are delicious. I'm not sure how to make it, but there is no yeast in it and you have to chill it overnight. You could probably find the recipe online.

Tofurky Roasts are vegan and really good. The stuffing is inside and some versions come with a bowl of gravy. I always make them like they suggest on the package (baked with sliced carrots, onions and potatoes). I baste all of it with a olive oil, soy sauce and sage mixture.
