Russia never made it to communism. Mikhail Prokhorov ended up with all the gold and bought the New Jersey Nets.

If you don't want the government to pick up the bill for the poor and oppressed, then light a fire under the church.

Krushchev spoke with the knowledge that our government was infiltrated with cockroach communist....especially at the State Department.  Joe McCarthy had been made to look like a fool in light of his hunt for the commies and the spines in Congress melted into the background leaving Joe to take the wrap.  Since that expansion has continued with a slow patient growth into the various sectors including education.  Under Obama, even the EPA is not immuned as it seeks more and more power over people rationalized on the basis of taking care of the environment.  The slimeballs are in power. ~WB

President Obama won the election. Hysterical assertions that he or his administration's policies are leading the country to communism won't change that fact however much you wish it so. It's done. The Democrats won. Move on.

No what's "coming on" is more paranoid, nonsensical bs. First Obama was a Muslim, then he secretly hated white people, then he was't even an American citizen, now he's ushering in a new era of communism (which  we also heard in 2008).

And what evidence pray tell do you present for this communist take over? A 50 year old quote from the leader of Soviet Russia (no bias there then) and a statement from you saying "it's happening".

Personally I'd be more concerned about rampant capitalism, and how profit motive can be reconciled with social responsibility. That's not easy. The zealots on Wall St get very angry when people threaten their profit.

Get real and take that tin hat off.

Nope. Why is everything an extreme? Capitalism as an economic system has issues. That doesn't make it (or wealthy people) "evil". Just means those issues need to be addressed. And if you like quotes so much here's one for you:

"This great Nation will endure as it has endured, will revive and will prosper. So, first of all, let me assert my firm belief that the only thing we have to fear is fear itself—nameless, unreasoning, unjustified terror which paralyses needed efforts to convert retreat into advance."  - Eisenhower

Don't be paralysed by "nameless, unreasoning, unjustified" fear.

It bothers me when conservatives label Obama a socialist because he has no desire for the government to take control of the means of production. It is true that Obama is no friend of free markets and would rather politicians and bureaucrats make the primary decisions about the economy.

What Obama wants is government control of the economy while allowing the ownership of the means of production to be left in private hands. This allows the government and politicians to experiment with the private sector and conveniently blame the private sector when thier ideas fail, which they almost always do!

If the government owned the means of production they would have to take responsibility for thier failed policies. That's why, this scenario is avoided like a plague by liberals, including the Obama administration. This is why Obama's policies are dare I say more fascist than socialist. Fascist in the sense that they allow private ownership of the means of production while tightly controlling the private sector through regulation.

Mussolini, the founder of fascism was widely admired by the left in the 1920's and many on the left considered him a man of the left. In the 1930's fascism fell out of favor with the left they verbally transferred this type of totalitarian dictatorship to the right. Mussolini was one of the leading socialists in Europe and greatly  admired by vladimir lenin and the Soviet Union was one of the first nations to acknowledge fascist Italy. Many American progressives, leftists also admired Mussolini as did a number of leaders in the FDR'S so called brain trust. The Democratic New York governor Al Smith ran against FDR in 1932 and later referred to the "New Deal" as fascist tract, similar to Mussolini's Italy.

According to Economist Thomas Sowell- "What socialism, fascism and other ideologies of the left have in common is an assumption that some very wise people -- like themselves -- need to take decisions out of the hands of lesser people, like the rest of us, and impose those decisions by government fiat."

Hello, Ms. Fae. I respect your opinions about the future of this country but your haste to accept any quotation to justify your theories is actually a challenge to your credibility. I am sorry to tell you that there is no record of Nikita Khrushchev ever saying those words.

In a speech before the 1954 National Convention of the American Legion, Francis Cardinal Spellman gave credit to Vladimir Lenin for saying, “First, we will take Eastern Europe, then the masses of Asia, then we will encircle the United States which will be the last bastion of capitalism. We will not have to attack. It will fall like an overripe fruit into our hands.” However, the Cardinal, like you, was mistaken. {1} The last two sentences have also been wrongly attributed to Khrushchev.

It is interesting to note that the image of falling fruit is clearly American. John Quincy Adams, in a letter to Hugh Nelson in 1823, stated “If an apple, severed by the tempest from its native tree, cannot choose but fall to the ground, Cuba, forcibly disjoined from its unnatural connexion with Spain, and incapable of self-support, can only gravitate towards the North American Union.” Again, in an 1854 essay “Annexation,” Parke Godwin asserted, “The fruit will fall into our hands when it is ripe, without an officious shaking of the tree. Cuba will be ours … in due season, without the wicked impertinence of war.”

      Thanks, Fae, for providing the “quote” just the same. It is common for Americans not to understand the differences between Communism, Socialism, and Social Responsibility. {2}

According to wikiqoute just another thing he did not say and as mentioned when Khrushchev says socialism he doesn't mean what you think he means so it's entirely meaningless. Socialism from his perspective is collectivization, worker seizure and agrarian reform all things that a certain founding father favored but none that are happening in modern America.

It is EXACTLY what is not happening. It is the supremacy of capitalism all around the world. Had socialism be part of the American culture poverty would not prevail in an economical power. Northern countries are perfect examples of socialism. When you don't know your subject, it is better not to refer to it.

I fell in it and I'm swimming in it with pleasure! Why don't you advance a sustainable argumentation instead of referring to one of Khrushchev's quote that dated from the 60's? In what way the US is a socialist or communist country?

          1. Josak profile image59
Josakposted 11 years agoin reply to this

The US is probably the least "socialist" major nation in the world. More to the point the communist interpretation of what socialism means is very different, they have a different definition here so it means something else entirely.

            Dictionary definition for you:

            so·cial·ism

            noun /ˈsōSHəˌlizəm/

A political and economic theory of social organization that advocates that the means of production, distribution, and exchange should be owned or regulated by the community as a whole

Policy or practice based on this theory

(in Marxist theory) A transitional social state between the overthrow of capitalism and the realization of communism

When Khrushchev made the comment (if he actually did) as a Marxist he would have been using the second definition which is not the same definition of socialism that is use in the US.

Capitalism is so firmly entrenched in America that anyone claiming that socialism is a threat is delusional.

I hear people bitching about Communism and business and liberalism and free market and the problem is that people don't know anything about them until they get called out and have to google, cut and paste the definition as if they disproves what was clearly displayed from their previous argument, that is, they have no clue what they are talking about.

It's worse than you think. Ronald Raygun. the best actor to ever play president,  convinced the media that the cold war is over. Sure, the wall came down, but haven't you ever heard of the strategy "one step back, two steps forward"? The cold war isn't over, and Raygun opened the floodgate for industry to move to China. He also took the federal cap off of interest rates (9%) and legalized white collar crime. My hero!
