Thankfully we did. It is a great day for our country and for the 99% of us that Romney and the Republicans would have destroyed.

I always knew Obama would win and for one reason:  in the end, good always wins.  Those who spewed hatred in the name of Patriotism undid themselves and wound up causing more people to come out and vote for Obama than normally would have done so.  It's time for the negativity to stop and the healing to begin.

Politics competes with religion on this one.

Still - my pals in Colorado tell me Marijuana is now legal there. Should be fun watching the fighting over that one. lol

Not really much the Feds can do with it. States do have the right to pass there own laws and if the people have spoken in Colorado (and Washington as well) then the Feds really have no say since the laws passed have the marijuana being taxed and regulated.

Totally inaccurate. The Fed always overrules the state. States can pass laws that are MORE restrictive than the Fed, but never LESS restrictive than the Fed. In other words, pot is still illegal and the Feds can still arrest someone in a state that has legalized it if it chooses to. Eric Holder simply chooses not to enforce the federal law in these cases, as he announced several years ago.

Well there have been a few states that passed laws legalizing same sex marriages, as it is their right. So immediately the right wing Republicans in congress passed a law that negates the state's laws in regards to Federal benefits, such as immigration and social security. I am sure those who are opposed to the legailization of marijuana are now looking for a way for the Federal government to negate them.

The fate of the hard right Senators should disprove that I hope. Much as I would like to see you become a Dem tongue I hope it won't be necessary, if the GOP bother to look at the demographics they lost they should figure out what they need to change. I am happy to have a conservative economics party, it keeps everyone sane, but the social policies are largely bigoted and (I have to agree with Mio) xenophobic.

The three same sex marriage referendums might provide another hint.

you make a fair point ,and I would like to make it clear that republicans and democrats, liberals and conservatives are just as indispensable in a democratic society, and are just as valuable in my opinion, they are capable of putting forward policies and legislation that can be of benefit for the whole country and all its people, the other ones, the extremists from the right and the left are the ones that usually cause nothing to be able to move one way or another, therefore benefiting no one.

Sadly, there are racists, bigots, and xenophobes all around us.  As many registered Democrats as Republicans, I'd imagine.  Thankfully, I believe the average American voter chose their candidate from a far more moderate place than is understood by the extremists on both sides.

wildernessposted 11 years agoin reply to this

Very true, but not so bad as it looks.  The problem is that the extremists scream the loudest and make the most noise in their effort to "convert" moderates to their particular way of thinking.

Remain calm, look around quietly and listen to the man in the street that speaks in a normal, rational manner rather than screaming emotion laden statements that make no actual sense in your face.  You will learn far more.

As evidence, I present the OP.  What did you actually learn, aside from a minor tidbit about the attitude and character of the writer?

You know, that's probably the best advice I've ever received.  Thank you.  smile

My mother was always very quiet about her vote.  She would never tell me who she chose in an election, but we talked a great deal about politics and so I could generally make an educated guess.  What I always respected the most about her was her willingness to discuss anything political with anyone, but never to argue.  She never raised her voice in a political conversation, and she never took the bait when someone of an opposite opinion attempted to reel her in to their more extreme ideas.

You'd have liked my mom...lol  She gave the same advice in her actions that you just gave in your words.

C'mon, Ralph.  You're gonna tell me that all those southern Democrats are open-minded and liberal in all questions of race and religion?  What about those who are not registered in any specific party?  Are they automatically racists, bigots, and xenophobes because they aren't registered Democrats?  I always find it fascinating when the Democratic party is touted as the party of open-minded liberals.  People are people - and there are extremists on both sides - and extremists are not by nature open-minded.

I respect all political opinions (whether I agree with them or not), but I do not think that either party is peopled with demons and villains just because they think or vote differently from the other.  It's unreasonable and untrue to suggest otherwise.

That's exactly what I'm not saying.  I'm saying that anyone who believes that a win for the Democratic party is a win against racism and bigotry is wrong.  It's a win for the Democratic party and nothing more.  The southern Democrats of whom I was speaking are traditionally....well, perhaps the least offensive way to say it is that they tend toward fundamental religious expression and a distrust for those of other races.  So, the idea that the US Democratic party is made up solely of liberal, open minded individuals is incorrect.

Perhaps.  That's something I hadn't considered, to be honest.  I am neither a registered Republican nor Democrat, but I disagree that there are more extremists in either party.  I believe that they are fairly evenly distributed between both, and think that's why so many are choosing NOT to be associated with either party anymore, regardless of how they vote.  I have one single friend who is a registered Democrat and believes entirely in the party's platform.  Everyone else I know is split on so many issues that they choose not to identify with either party specifically.

AND, to be fair, I know you are much more knowledgeable in terms of modern politics than I am.  I wouldn't continue to argue specifics, because I'm not privy to all of them.

When I grew up in Louisiana the only state election that meant anything was the Democratic primary. The winner of the Dem primary essentially automatically became the governor because he faced only token GOP opposition. The GOP was practically non-existent then, but now the GOP has taken over nearly the whole state as is the case of most of the formerly Democratic states in the South. However, to be fair, the current Republicans are less racist than the old Democrats fifty years ago. The current governor of Louisiana, Bobby Jindal, is conservative but not a racist so far as I know. Ditto for some of the other southern state GOP governors.

Its not the that there is a small minority of Republicans who fit into it. It is the Republicans choices of leadership that I think needs to be dissected.

Today we really need to remember that "We remain more than a collection of red states and blue states. We are, and forever will be, the United States of America."

There is clearly a need to understand and categorize the outcome as well as the process.
      What just happened?
      Why did it happen?
Why did it not go the other way?
      What does this mean?

Is the result an affirmation that Americans were happier with Obama's first term than they let on?
Is the result a rejection of something/everything Romney stands for? What Ryan stands for?
Does Obama's win mean 47% of Americans really are takers and want to continue taking?
Does RR's loss mean Americans don't believe they'll create American jobs?

      Did Obama win this race?
      Or dId Romney lose it?

I suppose it all depends on where you sit.
Maybe it's time to switch seats, so we each get a little different perspective on the next four years.

        Interesting questions.

What just happened? Obama won a very close election and didn't do as well as he did the first time. That alone should tell him something.

Why did it happen? I would say there are a lot of people who want stuff and Obama gives them stuff! There are people who just want to see him do well and are convinced he needs more time. There are some who just are very ignorant voters and the only news they get is from Mtv or some other equally ridiculous place.

Why did it not go the other way? For the same reasons already stated.

What does this mean? That once again our country is split down the middle, maybe Obama needs to move that way too.

Is the result an affirmation that Americans were happier with Obama's first term than they let on? No, or it wouldn't have been this close.

Is the result a rejection of something/everything Romney stands for? What Ryan stands for? No, or it wouldn't have been this close.

Does Obama's win mean 47% of Americans really are takers and want to continue taking? Hmmm, see first answer.

Does RR's loss mean Americans don't believe they'll create American jobs? Some Americans believe that, some Americans believe in Bigfoot too.

Did Obama win this race? Yes and no!

Or dId Romney lose it? Yes and no!

Obama won re-election and has a mandate from the American people no matter what Rush LImbaugh might tell you.

Why did it happen? People believe in Obama and understand that things are starting to get better.

Why did it not go the other way? Romney was a terrible candidate

What does it mean? It means that the GOP better start participating in government and thinking about the people over politics.

Is this an affirmation that people are happier with Obama than they let on...well yea, or else he wouldn't have won.

Is this a rejection of what Romney/Ryan stand for....Yes, or else they would have won.

Does the 47 percent still want to take stuff....No, that was essentially a lie/talking point with no basis anyway

Did Obama win the race.... Yes, he did win, right?

You do realize that Obama got a higher percentage of the popular vote than Clinton or Bush did when they were elected?

You and I both know that the 47 percent garbage is a fabrication and a lie

If Romney was the better candidate, why did the GOP work so hard to replace him with ANYBODY else

If Romney/Ryan had such a great plan, why didn't they win? Hence, Obama is the better candidate/the man who America wants to lead the country.

I am a Republican and I do not like being labeled. But since we live in a Democracy and the system elected President Obama then I, and so should everyone else, must respect the decision of the majority and be proud that we live in a country that allows for dissension. We should now work towards making this a greater country, one to be proud off and work to change the things that we do not like or work to make the things we like even better.

Democracy works and respecting the processes through which it functions is not only a responsibility but a duty as well.

While I think we must do something about illegal immigration, those brought here as children really had no control of what was being done. Perhaps a path to citizenship should be streamlined and put in place.

This and other things must take place to bring the Republican Party more to the center. By the same token, don't expect me to be more receptive to Obama. To me, he's still a horrible president and will only make things worse.

His health care plan was the model for Obama's plan, seems to me the problem is the democrats who don't have a single idea or at least any workable ideas to get this country back on the right track. Obama's followers voted for him for stuff not for any other reason! He has been a failure from the start.

Yes a Republican Gov. that couldnt carry the state he was Gov of. 'Mitt was wildly unpopular in Massachusetts, his home state. Obama carried Massachusetts by 23 percentage points. Romney claimed to have been an effective Governor who practiced bipartisanship, but the word got around that he had been an arrogant, dogmatic prick.'

His running mate couldn't even deliver his home state of Wisconsin (where the GOP ticket lost by a stunning 6.7 percent

Fact is Romney was nothing but an untrustworthy candiate. He had taken just about every position on every issue saying whatever he thought would get him elected. It never was clear what he believed in other then the candidacy of Mitt Romney.

Great candiate the Reps picked. Maybe the next election they will come down to reality and give the party someone worthwhile.

Best comment today by Martin Bashir:  "The GOP is going through Kubler-Ross's five stages of grief."  [In response to a comment by Paul Ryan on how popular his and Romney's ideas are.]

Fortunately the fifth stage is acceptance , we move on !  Obama will continue in his dogmatic pace of  doing absolutely nothing for this country!  Yet empty rhetoric flows freely like cheap talk from a car salesman !    Here's the thing , Romney was a poor pick for a candidate- simple ! . The GOP simply failed to deliver even one touchdown in a game of  dynamic  youth vote marketing and  Rhetorical promises   from a  great intellectual  Idealist like O-man straight into the innocence of gullible  minds  of the average college kid mentality of the left  !

Now i hear many republicans saying Romney was a poor choice but only a few weeks ago it was hard to find a single republican who didn't drink the cool aid and thought Romney was going to win in a historic landslide. Most republicans were already celebrating  and saying how they were going to repeal obamacare, torture all illegals into self deportation, name some supreme court justices to enable the overturn of roe v wade. And in reality the majority of the country may be center right but the key word there is CENTER.

It's good to know you have such accurate information about what the Repubs and right wingers were going to do....I read that article in the Enquirer too!!  Gee!  Can you believe they were going to actually torture illegal aliens?     Oh my, in all humanity, what stark barbarianism!

all I'm saying is not heresay it's what the candidates themselves and their mouthpieces said they were going to do.the joy in seeing their defeat was indescribable .

If Republcans drank the Kool-Aid, you drank the Flavor Aid (that's what they drank in Jonestown).

I voted for Romney as the lesser of two evils. He was a poor choice since Obama was vulnerable and there could have been a Republican ticket that could have defeated him. I also voted for Democrats like Kathleen Kane for Attorney General of Pennsylvania.

Not one Republican I know thought Romney would win in a landslide. Most thought it would be close.

Is the grape Flavor Aid your favorite?

                That's the politically correct answer.

Sure, the cherry tastes great but my favorite the lemon-lime is less filling.

Hey, we should make a commercial together.

You're correct about that.  Because the key word most certainly is not RIGHT.
Sad state of affairs when the majority of a Nation's citizens are WRONG, indeed.

Give it a rest will you?  Never have I seen such an unsportsmanlike attitude.  The left wingers claim to be more tolerate but yet are quick to call names even after they have gotten their way.  Grow up.

@Josak - I voted for the big - O - four years ago. Since I was disappointed in both -  I didn't vote this time. Does that make me a bad person? But I'm with you Josak -  No one should say he "cheated" unless they have proof! Slanderous statements are NOT smart! I don't care who's side of the fence you're on!

the way a person votes has nothing to do with being a good person or not ,some of the best people i know are as conservative as can be and some of the people i have loved the most in my life such as my grandparents were staunch conservatives.

In todays America, the entire political system has evolved away from its origional intended  focus.  A democraticly designed system of allowing popular beliefs to elect a representative .  What we now have is image marketing , even  subliminal methods of presenting a candidate for choice.  Just think in a year or two you will be able  chose from a lineup of halogram images!  It won't even be a "real" person anymore . Just an image .------- The perfectly polished and  flashy empty suit , a pure statesman with a perfectly pivoting head for the  teleprompters . The long black two  thousand dollar  rain coat open and blowing in the wash of the hellicopter blades as he waves at the press !  His black  shoes so polished   that in thier image  you see all reflections, you can even  see the camera's flash bulbs popping away from  his feet , imagine , mercurial wings of pure and unadultered  image carrying him away safely from the helicopter. We won't even have to chose anymore , no vetting , no voting . These new -' West World ' presidents will be perfect !  Here's the beauty of it though , you can still drink the pre-mixed cool aid of choice!
