I didn't get back to the South West for Christmas because of the problems with the trains, did anyone else get stranded? Hard to believe that this time last year there was a drought.
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article … -Year.html
I saw the weather forecast for the rest of the week, and it is not looking good with a huge Atlantic depression south east of Iceland sweeping in.
I am fortunate enough to live in an area not affected by flooding, presumably because it rains all year round, so that the land is well-used to deluges.
I do feel for those people who have been flooded out of house and home, and who have lost their possessions.
I wonder how many house-builders will hold their hands up and take responsibility for concreting over natural flood plains, and diverting the natural water run-off.
None of them will. They will just find someone else to blame. And then the insurance companies will refuse to pay out. I can't imagine how stressful this has been for the families flooded out, especially if they have babies, or elderly people or sick people to take care of.
And now this government is claiming that they have to concrete over more of the green belt - do they never learn?
That is awful, sorry that happened to you at Christmas time. I saw it on the news that the railway lines had been washed away by the floods and that had caused travel disruption.
I just read the reports on the net and didn't even attempt the journey, as my train was cancelled - especially after seeing pictures from Twitter of the queues for the buses that were (and still are I think) replacing part of the journey. That train route now even has its own hashtag.
So sorry you were stranded at Christmas because of flooding, CM. That does put a crimp in your holiday. You mentioned a possible need for ark-building plans. I have a complete set of them. Bought them from a guy named Noah. Interested?
That's terrible. The weather hasnt been that extreme of the christmas across the water. Wishing you the best from Ireland. 2013 will be a great year
Ha- We live on top of a hill in Leicestershire- there is a little park opposite perhaps we could build an ark there?
It stopped raining for a little while today which was nice- going to Brighton and back on Friday/Saturday so hoping that it wont be too wet-
Last year at Christmas we went out to Rutland Water a large reservoir and it was half empty now.......well nowhere is empty. At least we wont have any droughts next year ( nothing would surprise me if we did)
CMHypno- sorry you did not get west before christmas I guess it was the wrong type of rain on the line!
Here's hoping for a nice non rain filled 2013 ( however I guess that countries in drought would not say that)
Still raining here on Dartmoor. In fact, right now, it's sunny and raining hard?! Don't know if my daughter will be able to get home from Derby and it's always touch and go as to whether I will be able to get to work/home again.
How many cubits long is this boat supposed to be when I've built it??
We turned up at our local train station in Cornwall to travel up to Somerset for a family get-together last Saturday. The train was announced and then after five minutes, we were told it was cancelled. After a few conversations with a couple of people who seemed to be in India (the station is unmanned - we had to use the phone) we were told there would be no bus service either.
Thought we might travel up today, but apparently tracks are damaged, so we will leave it until February half-term. We aren't suffering flooding here, but the cliffs have suffered a few landslips due to the heavy rain.
Also apparently engineering works are overrunning on the lines out of Paddington, so even more confusion and pain for commuters trying to get back to work.
Now they are closing the Thames Flood Barrier for the first time in 2 years:

Us Mancunians are always moaning about the rain, we receive so much of it. But it's times like this we also realise how lucky we are- we're fairly high up so don't suffer from flooding as much. It must be devastating to lose your possessions and for your home to be completely flooded. I really feel for all those people who seem to be experiencing this with such frequency.
Sorry about your journey, CMHypno! I hope things get back to normal pretty soon.
Let's build an arc on the Pennines- There'd be a lovely view.
