"College student's turtle project takes dark twist"
What in the heck is wrong with so many of us...?
http://news.yahoo.com/college-students- … 57207.html
Sometimes humans feel a need to prove they are the dominant species on this planet by taking a two-ton metal vehicle and squishing a defenseless creature under the tires, said Hal Herzog, a Western Carolina University psychology professor.
That once happened to me when I took my children to Blackpool for the day. A complete nutter drove onto the pavement and run me over!
As far as I'm concerned, anyone who does what that article describes needs psychiatric help.
[edit] And they can get that help while serving time.
Yep, sick. I hate any form of cruelty to animals. Says a lot about the driver and the societies which we live in.
I'd always been under the impression that this kind of psychiatric disorder was uncommon. Now I realize that it is probably even more common than the number of crimes committed against people every day.
Is it a psychiatric disorder, or do we live in societies where violence and the need to dominate [ any species] is culturally acceptable in [western] societies, accepted...often admired? Sorry, my social sciences back ground is oozing!
I agree it's mean to try to kill a turtle that way. I've avoided lotsa turtles in my time as a driver, and avoided rabbits, squirrels, kitty cats, dogs.......
...However.........it's also rather irresponsibly thoughtless (bordering on inhumane actually, and I'd say criminal to place an object in a roadway to distract people) to place an object that looks like a real turtle on a roadway where it may distract the driver of a vehicle. PEOPLE (not just turtles) could get hurt or killed that way. The guy's research went too far, I think.
So, I think both behaviors are disgusting. But actually, that researcher's actions are worse than the others.
We always stop and help box turtles across the road. If it's a snapping turtle, it's on its own, though.
So glad I scanned through the comments before reading the link you provided. I absolutely do not want to SEE any sort of act of cruelty on an animal or living creature of any species.
If I had my way.....these extraordinarily "sick" and demented individuals would be quadra-cuffed and locked in a room, occupied by animals, who have comfy beds and gourmet food and attendance by caring animal lovers.......while the alleged humans were ignored and given nothing but crackers and water....as they watch the animals being spoiled and pampered. There is no excuse, nor forgiveness for any of the egregious cruelties put upon these innocent creatures.

Every adult box turtle is vital to the future of its population. Box turtle populations in the fragmented habitats typical of the eastern United States are so sensitive to the loss of adults that, according to modeling studies conducted by Dr. Richard Seigel of Towson University, the loss of just...
