Flagging Duplicate Content

   I have a question.
   
   After all the arguments recently about publishing duplicate content I wondered about this hub:

   I am pretty sure I flagged it some time ago as being copied almost word-for-word from here:
   
   http://www.gaincapital.com/forex-market … tions.html
   
   Along with another hub by the same author, I think.
   
   This hub is currently sitting at the top of the list of hot hubs and the author is claiming to be very happy with the amount of money he makes from adsense ($100 a week was what he was claiming I believe)
   
   After having several religious hubs removed over the same issue, I wondered what the deal was with this? I wouldn't like to think that the religious ones got any different treatment to the financial ones and I have no problem flagging these for exactly the same reasons I flagged the religious ones.

   Plagiarism is plagiarism, however noble or mercenary the motives.
   
   Flag 'em, I say, flag 'em!
   
   Maybe HubPages will need to hire new staff just to follow up on all the flags ...

   I flagged one yesterday that was taken from Wikipedia word for word and it's gone now. It was on this Chinese guy that lived to be 200. It didn't take long for that hub to come down.

      You've got to wonder why people do that, but quite a few do. I've seen more than one article cut and pasted directly from wikipedia, or sections of an article, where they didn't even bother to remove wiki's links and citations and notations where additional information was required. I don't usually flag them, I must admit, because the dupe checker catches the author, and their author ranking is almost invariably below 75.

   Well, dupe checker gives 63% similar, which may be not enough for the penalty...

      Hmmm. That's interesting, because Mark's eyeball result, i.e reading the text, with the exception of the opening line, gives almost 100% similarity.
      
      I will certainly like to hear what the team says.

   There is more to a webpage than just the text. All menus, disclaimers, titles, widgets, etc. And that dilutes the duplication

      Only Paul can say for sure, but most of dupe checkers I know work this way... I can't even check my main site duplicates with copyscape, cause every site that uses the same platform immediately goes into duplicates

   There is a site, copyscape.com, that searches web for the copies of URL you give it.
   
   It can be pretty useful, but not for me. I am using CMS called PHP-Nuke for my main site, and when I tried to check one of my pages for duplicates, it just plain started to serve me all other sites that use the same CMS...

      If it helps I use this for dup content checking. Returns very good results and does not restrict you to ten searches like copyscape.

    Ah, OK.
    
    I have tried copyscape and found it to be rubbish. I just add a bunch of links to my own site in my posts and when I see a strange inbound link, I take a look. That's how I found the blogger who was stealing all th hubs. I have found several instances of my work copied like that.
    
    Where is your main site anyway?

    Mark,  all we do with what we've identified as duplicate content is lower the HubScore.  The more heavily duplicated it is (ie. the more sites that have the same content), the bigger the effect.
    
    It's considerably more work than flagging, but if you really want to put a stop to it you should contact whoever you think the copyright holder of the content is, and inform that their content has been stolen.  Give them a link to the hub, and to this page:
    
    http://hubpages.com/help/copyright_infringement
    
    and they can file a DMCA complaint with us.  If they do that, we'll yank that hub immediately and probably ban the user as well.
