Black GOP Conservatives play the "Victim Card"

That's right...Black GOP Conservatives are now playing the victim card to draw attention to themselves. They now claim they are victims of vile name-calling from the Democratic Party, the Congressional Black Caucas and the "liberal media" because of their conservative values and for being black within the GOP. They claim they are being rejected by the "black sheep" (black voters) on the "plantation" because they believe in self-worth, individual achievment, education, safe schools and safe neighborhoods...values the black community does not harbor or share as they do. They claim blacks vote on emotion and not on stated principles like every other voter demographic group does when they enter the voting booth... when in fact conservative blacks have had an opportunity for years now to persuade black voters they should align themselves with the GOP and they have failed  to make their case. They do not realize that they are "outcast" within the very Party they want to be associated with. Black voters get it! They realize the GOP expouses priniciples and an agenda that negatively impacts the black community. Black conservatives are ignored by GOP decision makers and marginalized by the tea party crowd and now chose to be victims.

Last night I watched Hannity on FOX  where a collection of black conservatives were gathered to bash and berate President Obama and to promote themselves. The issues of the day are gun violence, immigration reform, same sex marriage, jobs and the economy. Not one black conservative on the program discussed any of these topics...they only discussed their own victimhood and President Obama failures as a leader...to the delight of Hannity and FOX. Dr. Ben Carson and other black conservatives are not being attacked because of their personal and professional accomplishments as black men and women...black pioneers have contributed to advance medical science for years. Dr. Carson did not blaze the trail as some within conservative talk would have you believe. Nor are his fights to overcome bias and prejudice unique to him. The black community looks towards him with great pride and respect as we do with all of our great acheivers in the history of America...but they will not subcribe to his "wacky" political beliefs just because of who he is.

So, to you these black conservatives should keep their place?

      1. chipsball profile image61

Certainly not...their "place" is on the right side of political discourse...not the negative name calling and race baiting Hannity, conservative talk and FOX likes to instigate. Black GOP conservatives eat that stuff up like "ginger snap cookies" and choose to be used.

Now now! Can't we all get along? MY message to black conservatives is to work within the GOP if that is where you want to stay...and  work to change the platform whereby it is more appealing to black voters and drop this victim mindset you have fallen into. You cannot berate and ridicule black voters and expect them to join you in the GOP. It ain't going to happen.

Where is the berating and ridicule that you speak of? You seem to be saying that only Black democrats suffer from some sort of racism and that Black conservatives are just not Black enough to experience it.
Why exactly do you feel that way?

Don't you agree that the Democratic platform was more acceptable to black voters than the GOP platform? The policies as outlined in the Demo platform are more in line with black voters preferences on where the country should be headed than those policies principles of the GOP. On all major issues. Hugh difference.

Black GOP conservatives used the entire past election to bash and berate Obama.

Did Black GOP conservatives have an opportunity to persuade black voters to vote Republican?

Did they have air-time to make their case?

I think the issue is that ever since Nixon's attempts to gain the support of voters in the South by supporting racism against African Americans (which worked) Republicanism has been associated with racism.

So some democrats may be incredulous as to why a black person would want to align themselves with that party. I'm sure some democrats who are black may also consider it some kind of betrayal to support a party that often ignored black voters and exploited racial tensions.

It's even more perplexing when people like Col. Lawrence Wilkerson the former chief of staff to Colin Powell says things like:

"My party unfortunately is the bastion of those people, not all of them, but most of them who are still basing their decisions on race. Let me just be candid, my party is full of racists and the real reason a considerable portion of my party wants President Obama out of the White House has nothing to do with the content of his character, nothing to do with his competence as commander in chief and President, and everything to do with the color of his skin, and that's despicable."

When it's own members are saying this, it's not difficult to see why some would struggle to see why an African American would want to go anywhere near the GOP. Wouldn't it be better for sensible Republicans to form a party that expresses Republican principles, but without all the racist baggage.

DonW you need not go any further than taking a look at who are the Republican decision makers. They are all-white male with the same idealogy and same strategy on dealing with minorities...particularly African-Americans that got them 4% of the AA vote in this past election. These black conservatives have no "voice" in the GOP and are used by the GOP/FOX and conservative talk to present a "false front" that in reality does not exist. Black conservatives and the GOP have had ample opportunities to presuade black voters... have tried, failed and it's because of their policies and agenda. Also, it does not help when black conservatives themselves chose to ridicule and condemn a very popular president within the very communities they seek empathy.

As far as forming another party...the Tea Party may have been the ticket, but unfortunately they have mirrored the GOP.

I've never understood why minorities shield behind the conservatives. But I will never take mercy on a conservative.

Black conservatives are used by this GOP to deflect and misinform. When the issues are the main theme...black conservatives retreat into this victim mode when they know they cannot advance the GOP agenda, sucessfully within the community. SAD but true...the GOP agenda does not resonate within a very informed segment of the black body politics.

Could we have some kind of link to a primary source?  I am sure black conservatives do experience some racism.  Being a Republican doesn't make a person immune to racism or make racism directed towards them any more acceptable.

Review the GOP platform from just this past election and you can understand why 95%  of African American voters rejected black conservative's call to vote Republican. Didn't make political sense. If it was all about Obama's race and kinship with black voters, they would have voted for that knucklehead Cain and that nut job in Florida... West.

Black conservatives are used by this GOP to deflect and misinform

This is key, how many times have I said as much over several forums and articles. The GOP despicably used both alan Keyes and the Bozo, Herman Cain. They have earned the distrust of the black community by their policies, platform and behavior on the ground.  I resent the usual rightwing bone heads that are regulars here assuming that 95% of a group are ignorant and that the Uncle Toms have got it right. Fox News is just an enabler and is guilty through association.

      Right on target, nice forum!

Without self promotion< i have written an article that addresses that question, Why do blacks vote Democratic and much of the article speaks of why blacks have been cool to the GOP.
So it depends, are you really looking for answers and legitimate inquiry or just parroting rightwing talking points?....

I am asking you to back up your statement by explaining how just one plank of the GOP platform would have hurt blacks. Surely you can choose just one and explain how it goes out of it's way to harm black people, right?

            Just one?!
So many to choose from. OK opposition to free/funded college education as most first world countries have, people in the black community due to their poverty thus are prevented from gaining educations which would allow them to rise socio-economically and be successful and are kept uneducated and poor because conservatives are unwilling to shell out for such programs. Thus perpetuating the racial divide.

I see, so limiting the free stuff they get hurts them. Ok.

              Are all black people poor?

No just a disproportionate segment of the black community. The US has the worst economic mobility in the first world because of GOP policies and as such black people have remained poor, which harms them and actually harms the whole country too, since at the end of the day even the GOP are not comfortable with watching them starve to death so instead of giving them opportunities for education and progress we give them chump change to keep them alive. Human investment is not a principle conservatives have grasped.

There is a difference between "free stuff" and investment, in most countries people go to college free of cost, have their rent and food paid while they do so then they pay it back with their higher wages, once they are earning above say 40 000 yearly a small amount is automatically deducted to pay for the expense. That is not "free stuff" it's raising people up and it has worked all over the world.

I see because Greece, Spain, Cyprus and the rest of the EU are doing so well due to their socialist policies, right? Free giveaways and all. That got them far didn't it?

The whole thing is collapsing around their ears, but you think we should try the same here, because this time it's really, really going to work?

Why should the color of a persons skin predetermine how they should think and believe? Or do you just think black folks should be kept on the liberal plantation like good little sheep who need their betters to look out for them and provide for them since they can't, obviously, do things for themselves or make it on their own drive and talent?

Any self-respecting minority should be insulted at the way the left views them.

Ok skip the argument to another one, fine.

Europe is on average doing better than the US you know? Sure several countries are struggling but several are doing very well, which are doing best on average? The ones furthest to the left, Norway, Iceland, Finland, Sweden etc. etc.
                    So that argument is rubbish.

The only people who want black people on a plantation are those who deny them the opportunity to access education and other means of improving their station, and that would be squarely the GOP, that would be why the US has massive wealth gaps and tiny economic mobility and that is how the GOP has kept black people poor.

Of  course not.   There is a LARGE and SIGNIFICANT middle and professional class.  However, the Black underclass is oftentimes the center of focus for many in the general society.

While the concerns about the Black lower  class and underclass is the main concern among Liberals, the Black middle and professional class also have legitimate concerns e.g. careers and socioeconomic issues.  The Black lower class and underclass are NOT the be and end all.   Many of the latter are in their dire socioeconomic situation by THEIR OWN design, like it or not!

Did not want you to think that I had forgotten you.....

Excerpt from one of my articles:
'Republicans were still in opposition to the principles of the “New Deal” and concepts of minimum wage. The Democrats were fast becoming the party that at least attempted to look after the economic interests of the middle class, working class, and poor. As people who have a higher percentage in the working classes and poor, with whom are we going to identify?'

And OK, Mr.Superman, how much free stuff do you get? You best remember that Obama won over several demographics, including Asians and Jews, who relative to the Anglo population have no economic distress. Perhaps you better figure out how that is possible!!!
The point is that the GOP is Donald Trump's and Thurston Howell's party, with the most ignorant birther, tea party types, setting the agenda.

I would rather stay with a friend who occasionally disapoint than to ally with an intractible enemy.....

I am not poor and I don't trust the GOP or any of its advocates as nothing more that aristocrats and racists hading behind motherhood and apple pie, ready to use their 'second amendment' solution to subvert the democratic process. I don't think that I have anything in common with such rabble as their very existence is adverse to our aspirations. Even blacks that are upper middle class and higher generally do not vote Republican
            excerpt from the article:

The bottom line being that until we can support ourselves and our families, everything else is scenery along the side of the road. If Republicans want to do better with Blacks it needs to show me and us how their unfettered free-market capitalism philosophy will lift all boats and not just the yachts. Even most of the wealthiest of us do not support the GOP, because we know that the progressives’ approach of seeing that the door of opportunity was opened was more important to success than conservative ideology and rhetoric, which never seems to hold water in reality"

A little something for you to think about, eh, SuperKev, well always remember "you asked for it"

It's a great way to insulate yourself from criticism.  Ben Carson made homophobic remarks, and that's why the left doesn't like him.  Does the left not also attack white Republicans who are anti-gay?  Give me a break.  Don't step into the national spotlight if you can't take criticism.

I guess he likes to dish it out to Obama who couldn't respond without committing a social faux pas, but doesn't enjoy real, direct argument.  He's a political shyster.
