What has happened to "Love thy neighbor" and compassion for your fellow man in this Country?

It's meaning has changed to threatening your neighbor with accepting Jesus or facing eternal damnation.

It's been replaced by what's in it for me.....there's a government program to help them....oh, I'd help but that would cut into TV time.

We are self absorbed because we have been programmed to be that way.

How can we be programmed this way if we do not allow it. Compassion towards your fellow man should be within your heart, not your brain.

Well, a lot of people give lip service to love and compassion. Do you do everything within your power to show love and compassion to those who need it the most or do you spend most of the time talking about it or thinking about it.

I do my best each day to show my fellow man compassion. But, of course it easy to judge one on here. I will not listen to Troubled man's negativity. It does not belong in a forum about compassion. Do you not have any compassion Emile?

I'm afraid I was born with more empathy than most. I do feel compassion more than is healthy. I try to show in my words and actions. Unfortunately, feeling compassion and showing compassion for others makes me feel good. So, I never know if I do it for them, or for myself.

Love is more difficult. I would say I give my fellow man more love than I give myself. But, I'm pretty hard on myself so I don't think many feel the love.

I think that compasion is dwindling because these days there are more people than there used to be that ends up biting the hand which was extended for their support.
Some people are lucky when they show compassion and get to see good results come from their efforts.

For other people it seems that no good deed goes unpunished.
For some people when they show compassion it is seen as weekness and the pack comes in and deviours them.  It depends upon which neighborhood you live in and who you are trying to help, and how.
I will help anyone that I am able to, to get back up on their feet when that is what they are trying to do.

I'm not sure if you have a specific situation in mind or what, but I do know that I've observed what seems to be a growing tendency of a lot of people to not want to feel,  or not to feel anything but anger and sarcasm.   They don't want to have things like sorrow or regret or sadness or deep sympathy evoked.   That's even been reflected in music for years;  rap "music" is mostly just angry rantings;  funerals are called "celebrations of life",  people are cremated instead of being buried,  because they don't think their passing should evoke any sadness;  tv shows are all about drama, but not emotional drama;  they're usually just non-stop action and witty jabs at personality and behavior,  full of witty sarcasm and calling each other bad names like it's the normal thing to do.

And certainly nothing about regret or thinking before ya act.    Honestly, I've observed a trend even in Christianity lately----preachers are preachin' about making a choice (which is valid and good in itself!) but not much about the emotion of Loving the Lord or sorrow for sins;  people just go up to the altar and say a little ritualistic prayer and consider themselves born again; or else they think that just joining that particular Church means they're saved.
The world is a hard cold place;  that I know;  and maybe lack of compassion is a defense mechanism;  we can't stand being hurt ourselves, so we shut ourselves off from situations that evoke emotion, creating a scenario where we can't truly empathize with others either.
We often even shut ourselves off from joy.   Maybe not from pleasure, but from true joy.   Maybe we're jaded and fatalistic since we know the joy can't last all the time.

Is that anything along the lines of what you meant?   Is it helplessness about our own problems that cause us to be less sympathetic toward others?    I dunno.   But those are just my thoughts that were evoked by your question.....

Contrary to some false statements about humans not having a "heart",  we do indeed have an inner "heart" that's not just a robotic mechanism in our bodies.   We feel.  Our hearts were made to feel emotions, both positive and negative, good and bad.    I think many people deliberately make a choice to harden those hearts,  either from fear or from selfishness.............

JT why do you expect man to love his neighbour unconditionally and at the same time expect the Father's love to be conditional and come with an expiry upon death clause?
