Question(s) for veteran hubbers or staff...

Okay, I just got an e-mail from HP saying one of my hubs was unpublished for duplicate content. I know this has more than likely been answered but I'm going to go ahead with my question. I took a chunk of my hub and entered into google just in case somebody did copy it but I was led back to my own hub. The hub that I wrote had a large portion (I guess this is what set the automated filter off if I read the e-mail correctly) of one of my character's journal in a different part of my story. Another main character is reading a journal in order to understand his female boss so I'm taking portions of her journal

So my question is that can you not take a portion of your own hub and use it in another that is part of the same series (my Ice Queen series). I'm guessing it's not okay, but I think this is worth pondering about. If you can't, should I quote it or just do smaller portions (since I had no trouble with that)? For the record, I'm probably going to trim bits and pieces out, just in case. This hub baby (I'm only seven months old here on HP--that makes me a baby big_smile) wants to keep within the rules. Thanks for the advice!

      Great question, writinglover!
The answer is indeed that it is not OK, but it is possible to not change the format of your story so long as you add more original content to that page (our duplicate warnings are triggered by proportions; if the proportion is lowered, you'll be OK!).
Quoting in smaller portions will also help. Again, it's all about keeping the relative proportion down. big_smile

Thanks for the quick response, Simone! I will edit my hub right now! big_smile

Majority of your hub has to have content that is not published anywhere else (including in another hub). Try to shorten the parts in your hub that have same content as in another hub. Or if you can rewrite it in different words that would also be helpful. Of course if this is part of a story, perhaps rewriting in different words may not help the story.

Thanks, lovebuglena (love the username, by the way). Working on that now!

Coming from a fiction writer/reader POV: having the journal section written the same in both pieces could be redundant so I would take it out of one part or the other. You don't really need to have written on both parts, as your readers will just skim or completely ignore it the second time anyhow. If it is in the females pov, the journal will be read in her voice even if it is in the part where the male is reading it. Just make it clear that it was her journal. Use descriptors to show that she is writing without saying exactly what she wrote then readers will be excited to read/learn what she actually wrote when they get to that part later on.

@To Start Again: Thanks for the advice! I was just thinking about just writing parts of it (just the first line of her journal for example) and the rest of the chapter would be the thoughts of the male protagonist. I think I'll just do what you said from now on. smile

I agree with Start Again - it's not a good idea to repeat a huge chunk of material again, it's going to annoy your reader.

Gotcha. I think I'll look back on my previous hubs and do some editing. Thank you for your input! smile

If it's important to include the text, just put it in an image and use all you want that way.  (Take a screen shot of the text you want and make an image out of it.)

Thanks for your imput, Writer Fox! That's an idea I never really considered. I already fixed what little I had on my hubs. Also, I'm not that tech savvy so, unfortunately, I don't know how to do screen shots. I guess it's a good thing that I didn't get too far into my character's journal. big_smile
