Can I Blog Without a Niche?

   I've seen all over advice to find and stick to a niche of yours, some special area that you are an expert in.  As you can see from my profile, I don't have any niche, I'm very "all over the place".  Is there any market for blogs on random content?  Is there an alternative?  I keep hearing not to put all my eggs in one basket.  What other baskets are there than blogging and Hubpages?

   You can, if you want. It's just easier to nurture a fanbase or maintain a consistent online presence if you specialize.

   You do have a niche... It's just that you have more than one. I am sort of the same way: technology, internet, scambusting, Android, history, commentary, psychology, etc.
   
   So you identify the niches that you *do* have (it's fine to have more than one) and go after them. Just accept that you have MORE than one niche.

   I agree with this advice because I am supposedly an religion and philosophy writer on Hubpages. However, I have written hubs on a variety of subjects. I too would like to know of other alternatives. Ezines? Perhaps.

   I've seen a bunch of people on hubpages with a bunch of different topics and every now and then I write about something else I like.  I guess you could have a successful blog on several different topics.  I would just say make sure you like those topics so you can write your best making people want to come back and tell their friends. ...but that's just my 2 cents lol

   My advice, such as it is, is that if you want to give blogging a shot, you'll have the best chance of success if your blog is focused around one "main" topic. This can be a little deceiving because, depending on which topic you choose, your "main" topic can be HUGE and encompass dozens of smaller subtopics. The trick is to find one that's big enough to allow you some room for diversity in your subtopics, but not so big your blog comes across as too vague.
   
   For example, take the topic of psychology. That's an enormous topic that contains literally hundreds of subtopics. Saying that you blog about psychology is like saying you blog about law or about the arts - it's so vague your blog could still be about almost anything. But let's say you blog about developmental psychology instead. Now there's a real blog topic! It's relatively narrow, but still wide enough to include lots of juicy subtopics. You could literally never run out of stuff to say on a blog about developmental psychology, yet your topic is still relatively focused. You could write about brain development, nutrition, genetics and education levels and still be talking developmental psychology. That's just off the top of my head. You could come up with 20 more subtopics if you thought about it a bit.
   
   Anyway, it's something to think about if you want to try your hand at blogging. Hope this helps.
