Hi all. I am new here because I enjoy writing about what I know better than most...But I am not a social butterfly.
I have posted a few articles, which are featured (for what that's worth).
So now, I start reading the ENDLESS CONTENT regarding traffic and I get discouraged.
EVERYTHING about traffic seems to be based on....Google+, Twitter, Facebook, Pininterest (what's that!)
I am 50+ without a pre-existing online presence, and don't see that happening.
I feel sorta doomed for oblivion unless I find another means of attraction.
but which one??  pure seo?? Tagging other hubbers? Phone a friend?

Note: my next hub will be "How to create your own Pity Party",

Welcome to HubPages!  You are off to a fantastic start.  My advice would be to read as much as possible from our Learning Center.  Perhaps read one or two articles from the Learning Center a day to not get overwhelmed and try to apply the principles.  We provide a lot of information around writing about what you love and gaining readership.  It can be discouraging writing online, but it can also be very rewarding!  Best of luck!

I have another account with about 30 hubs that I have never shared on any Social Media platform, and have never promoted in any way. I have researched, written them and then moved on.

That account has had over half a million views from the search engines in just a year.

My advice is to write and then forget them, unless they don't attract any search engine traffic. In that case you will need to tweak them after taking advice from the Learning Center.

Don't despair.  If you chose decent keywords, the traffic comes.  Use google's keyword tool (under "exact" match search) and type in a sentence someone might ask about your topic.  Although I'm not an SEO expert, I get OK traffic without ANY backlinking.  I can't stand facebook, and I'm 30.

Boisegal...Thanks for your comment...would you expand this please...
".Use google's keyword tool (under "exact" match search) and type in a sentence someone might ask about your topic".
Gotcha....then what....Use that question verbatim in my content??
answer the question in my content?
What do you do based on your research.??
        Thanks again...

I am in the same boat.  I have never been that active on social sites but I am on them more now.  Somehow my traffic is picking up through google search engine.  Be patient.  It will pick up for you too.

I'll be hung out to dry by other hubbers, but...

Given that you have done your keyword research and have good on page SEO, stick a link on your FB for your friends and family to see (brag a little, in other words) and move on to writing the next hub.

Come back in 6 months and look at what search terms are being used to find your hub.   Tweak accordingly.  Repeat every 6 months to a year.

Oh, and a nice MFP picture might be a good thing to post on Pinterest.

Izzy, what do you consider to be "sufficient traffic"?

If you write articles that supply information people find useful, and title the articles with phrases that are similar to what someone might type into a search engine, you will get traffic. It also helps if your titles and summaries suggest you have something a bit different (better) to say than other articles covering the same topic. You have to give the searcher a reason to click on your title instead of all the others. In my experience this works much better than spamming my friends with links to articles they have no use for.

I do have a Pinterest account that is just "out there" in "Pinterest land" and not connected with any of my real life friends. I do pin things there from time to time, and pin other writers' articles, but haven't been there in ages. Overall, most of my traffic comes from search engines.
