Major article thief still at it.

Forgive me if this is old news and has already been reported, but the thief who stole so much of our content is still at it, apparently with exactly the same content that we were so busy filing DMCAs on back in April.

I don't know too much about technical stuff, but it appears to me that the thief has changed his/her old URLs to new ones listing page numbers, rather than the old URLs that included the articles' titles. For me, it is all the same stuff I found back in April.

If anyone found their content was stolen back in the spring, you might want to check again for it. All 30-something of mine are back up with different URLs.

This is definitely irritating. However, I would suggest that we 'google' or 'bing' or 'yahoo' some keywords and search. In my case, my articles pop up much higher on all search engines compared to the thief's!

So, at a practical level, it might not matter! I feel that the majority of the traffic to this thief's sites are actually originating from we hubbers! smile

Let's not give him/her traffic and attract attention of search engines to the completely copied sites. smile

Even though you didn't mention anybody by name, I had a horrible feeling that I knew what site you were talking about, so I took a quick look around and... yep. It's the same guy we've all gone at least two rounds with already in the past couple of months.

(SIGH) Y'know what? F*ck it. I don't have the patience to file dozens of DMCAs all over again. I've done it twice with this same A-Hole and he keeps popping back up like a Whack-A-Mole.

I hope he gets Herpes simplex 10 ... on his face.

He's had his sites back up for around six weeks now and he is adding new material from HP every day.  The sites all have the same URLs as before, they are just with a new host (who hasn't responded to DMCAs).

There have been several threads about this issue since early last month - I realise that many people don't visit the forums often, which is why myself and others have suggested that one of the threads listing his sites is stickied - it might be more noticeable then.

Thank you for the info, Judi Bee. I have been trying to avoid the forums, so I didn't know about any of this since his April "attack" on us.

A stickied thread is a great idea.

As far as the URLs, I meant that the URLs of his individual (stolen) pages are now different. His home pages still have the same URLs.

I wish there was something else we could do. My views and my income are down by 1/2 to 2/3 ever since around May 7. I thought it was because of Google algo adjustments, but I'm certain this is also in the mix. sad

My traffic started dropping in February, when he first set up his sites.  It's continued downhill ever since.  I'm past caring what's causing it - my crap writing, Panda, Penguin, thievery, thievery of (or indeed, by) Penguins, Shrove Tuesday, Diwali, the weather...  However, I would like to get his sites closed down so that I can safely move my ailing hubs elsewhere (traffic to my blogs aren't affected by my crap writing etc.)

Judi Bee, just scrolled up to see your comments. The site is hosted in Seoul, South Korea. DMCA legislation does not apply over there. As I said below, the best we can all hope for is to get the content de-indexed, by complaining to Google, and hopefully the site will eventually be sandboxed.

Where are you getting Soeul as the host location from?

When I checked a few of the sites at whoishostingthis.com the host listed is FiberGrid OU which seems to be based in the US, though I'm not 100% sure of that.

Contact details are pretty much non-existent but there is a (US ?) telephone number.

To confuse matters, after doing an IP look up at ip-tracker.org  - it seems like there is a connection to Sweden http://www.ip-tracker.org/lookup/whois- … .3.132.249

          Aah - here's the connection.

everythingathomes is hosted by webexxxpurts in Sweden which is linked to FiberGRid

Further research indicates that Fibergrid is owned by a con artist (no surprises there!) http://www.ripoffreport.com/r/fibergrid … et-1051003

webexxxperts seems to be owned by the same person.

I think the best bet is to file with Google search and Bing search (which also covers Yahoo), as the host is very unlikely to respond.

P.S. HP's copyright checker is not run that often and not for all accounts (HP have said it's very expensive to run), so you can't rely on it finding all the copied stuff out there.

  4. lovebuglena profile image86

They don't take it down. They give you a warning in the stats next to your hub saying possible copied content or something to that extent. You will see a copyright symbol next to that copied hub.

The guy is copying out stuff wall-to-wall, so go to each site and do a search for your HubPages user name on the home page. This should bring any of your articles up if he has taken any of them.

There seems to be some good advice on this forum thread, but to tell you the truth, I just skimmed it quickly looking for site names. I will go back and read it tonight.

That is horrible smartandfun, by the time I got the red copyright mark over 20 sites had copied the same hub.  It is definately not a perfect system, however at least it gave me a bit of a heads up.  I just recently started copy and pasting a bit of my hub to Google and seeing what pops up.  I have over 200 hubs though and half of them I will never get around to checking.  Sad that people can't spend an hour or less to write an article huh?

Thanks to the hubbers who first posted - JudiBee and others. I confess I never took too much notice of this thief before but having discovered some of my hubs on this low life's sites I am fuming. I ask myself why the hell can't the techno wizards do something about original content? If I write an article, date it, time it, original author, content etc etc, I should be able to click on a copyright button that only I have the password to. If the same content shows up on another domain a red flag should go up and the material be suspended/stopped/deleted. Why isn't this available?
Come on techno wizards surely there's a solution.

The internet is a thief's paradise at the moment. Is there anything else we can do to thwart these morally bankrupt idiots. Speak up all who have any ideas!

All I ever wanted to do was write useful articles. What's the point in writing more if any old moron can just gleefully thieve my work and get the traffic and earnings? These types must be laughing all the way to the bank whilst we the creators can do nothing!!

    What can we do?

      Had this very positive response back from Amazon Associates which states;

I received your email and i wanted to let you know that I am very sorry that your account is being plagerized, however, I'd be glad to help.

We certainly do not condone or tolerate such actions from any of our Associates. We'll contact the offender immediately and put a stop to this. I will also personally reach out to our business team, to ensure this gets handled accordingly.

With over a million Associate websites enrolled in our program, it is difficult to entirely prevent this kind of abuse. However, help like yours is invaluable as we work to ensure that the Amazon Associates Program  continues to run smoothly.

I know this is not the end of the matter, as the offender will simply find alternative means of monetizing the site, but at least it's a positive start.

Ok MarketingMerit. I wish you luck and satisfaction and a positive result. I am so angry this day. If the powers that be have no way to stop these thieves, no absolute power to stop them, which seems the case at the moment, then why should we bother to continue writing.
Some say it's an honour to be copied, I say the opposite. It's a disgrace to be copied because it shows how weak the system is. I'm sharing that system with thieves and immoral cheapskates.

What percentage of internet material is copied? It must be high, which is a travesty.

I can envisage a day in the not too distant future when all an author has to do is click is an icon and that will be that, copyright guaranteed, because any duplicate or copied content re-published will be stopped at source. Why can't the technos come up with something like that? Am I asking too much?

    What can we do?

Theraggededge: I am in the same boat, I don't want to make new hubs until this gets addressed... He's been around for a while now and nothing has stopped him. He steals content daily and puts it on his sites. A lot of people still don't realize this is happening, based on the fact that it's been a problem for 2 + months and is still ongoing. It's really frustrating. Maybe something would get done if more people knew about this, and made a big fuss about it...?

      1. Judi Bee profile image91

I find it frustrating too.  It's not stopping me publishing hubs (I have stopped, but because I'm doing other stuff), but it is stopping me from moving them elsewhere - I don't want to lose my date stamp as the original.

My guess would be that the majority of hubbers are affected by the scraper.  I would also guess, judging by the forum posts that pop up every week or so, that the majority of hubbers are unaware of the scraper.  Others simply don't worry about their stuff being copied, or are disaffected since managing to shut him down once only to have him reappear.

A quick check let me find at least one of mine.   That one has lots of links to info that I'd put on it, and shows up in full on the site.  Another one that showed up on there through my search turned out to be just a link back to one of my Hubs (that doesn't happen to have any links in it; so maybe that makes the difference).  Point is, they're both pasting actual Hubs and (apparently) linking back in some cases.

I'm not checking for more, but while I was there I did see the names of Kelley Ward and Practical Mommy on there somewhere (can't find them again right now).  Anyway, there's two people who may want to check if they've haven't already.

I don't know how things like scrapers work, but I did notice something (and have sure had my experiences with "manual" thefts).  I don't know if it's at all useful in figuring out who is doing what how; but I noticed that my user name shows up in two forms/searches on there - "Lisa HW" (with the space, as it is on this site) and "LisaHW" (without it, as it sometimes shows up on other sites).  If I recall correctly it was the one without the space that led to the link to one of my Hubs, while the one with the space in it went to the whole Hub, copied on that site and with all the links that I'd put into that Hub.

So I checked one of the websites, and checked my username.. Did the games-toys-hobbies once..AND.. he copied over 80 of my guides.... WORD FOR WORD.. I mean, I cannot file 80! DMCA suits, that would be ridiculous..

I mean, is there anything I can realistically do.. I mean I only checked ONE site and saw 80 of my guides on there.. No WONDER I am down to only 1,500 views per day instead of my 6000+ that I was at a few months ago.. But honestly, between making new Hubs here, Editing and posting videos on Youtube, being a student, getting content for my videos, working, and running a personal business I have NO time to file this many DMCA reports or suits or whatever...

Can we file a report against an entire site? NOT TO MENTION can Google step up their game and take these sites down who copy us.. I mean at least when I clicked on the links within the page it brought me to my other pages, and they left my Twitter and Youtube name in the guides.. BUT even still, this is kinda ridiculous..

You can file for your work that's been copied on the site(s).  If the host has enough complaints, the entire site may be pulled - that's what happened last time (ie in April) with this particular scraper.

However, he now has a new host who appears to specialise in spam/scraper sites and doesn't respond to DMCAs.  Therefore, file for your pages with Google/Bing etc.  They will be deindexed.  Some people have suggested that the whole of each site will be deindexed if Google has enough complaints - I don't know if that is true.

There were several threads about this in April - they didn't go anywhere very much, other than file with the host (pointless in this instance), file a complaint with Adsense, Amazon, etc and file a DMCA with Google.

As major chunks of the site are now copied, I would have thought more people would be interested in this issue, but looking at the relatively small number of DMCAs filed with Google for these sites, I guess they're either not aware, or not interested.

The process is actually simple, though tedious if you have a lot of pages.

          Here's the link to Google - https://support.google.com/bin/static.p … page=ts.cs

I really doubt our scraper in China will start legal action against you!

Yes that is the problem I am seeing.. I mean it will literally take a LOT of tedious work to file DMCA's for the 80+ articles on one site, my recipe hubs on another.. and I haven't even checked the other sites.. only two..

If you can dedicate an hour or two to it, it is totally worth it. The first couple might seem to go slowly, but once you get going they do go fairly quickly. You can enter more than one URL into the form, so that makes it go more quickly, also. Once I was finished copy-pasting URLs into the form, I copied both lists in their entirety and pasted them into a Word document, to make things go more quickly in case it doesn't go through or I need to do this again for some reason.

This is definitely something you can do while watching TV.

Just remember that you should only be filing with Google for the articles that are actually indexed and not the total number of articles that have been copied.

It seems like its done more as an attack on HubPages then it is to steal work.  Google usually adds weight to the content that was posted first, so copies don't pull in a lot of traffic, so i think the purpose of stealing so many Hubs is to hurt the HubPages site as a whole.  Try filing 1 or 2 complaints, if the site is in compliance they should eliminate the user.  If they don't it seems like it will become a legal issue.

I still need to re-file against this guy. (I haven't checked but I assume he still has all my hubs.) It is frustrating but it sounds like progress has been made since he no longer has adsense. Hopefully he'll lose ebay and amazon too. If he can't make money then maybe he'll give up - at least for awhile. And I agree about a sticky thread about this. We aren't talking about someone who has stolen a hub or two. We are talking about someone whose sites are nothing but stolen hubs, which are copied as quickly as hubpages posts them.

I filed some more Google websearch notices on this guy.

    Apparently, he hasn't been deterred.

**There are new hubs copied on the sites today.**

I think someone (maybe Chef-de-Jour?) reported publishing a hub and when checking later, finding that one of the scraper's sites had hoovered it up within a few minutes of its publication!

He's certainly persistent - he wasn't deterred by his first host taking his sites down, nor by losing Adsense.

He still has Amazon, and is using our Amazon ads with his affiliate ID.  I wrote to Amazon as well.  I am hoping that taking away his money will do the trick.

Depending upon the settings, autoblogs can re-publish a hub almost instantaneously. This may potentially give Google a problem, as to which article was published first, as the timing can be so close together. I'm also unclear if the 24 hour delay we experience for the QAP may infact work to his advantage in this respect. All depends when the article is shown in the Hubpages feed as this is where he will be scraping from.

Also, as he has demonstrated, he can change the permalink structure of his wordpress blog with a few clicks. Hence, as fast as we get his pages de-indexed from Google, he can be up and running with the same articles, on different url's, within a matter of seconds.

Given the hosting location, there are only several effective means of deterring the offender. The first is to keep complaining to Google, in the hope that the site will be blacklisted (sandboxed) so none of their links show.
Secondly, is to remove his income sources. As I have written above, I have already contacted eBay and Amazon, so hopefully some of his accounts will get banned. However, I suspect that he probably 'bought' the affiliate accounts and may well do the same thing again, although he will probably have to purchase new domain names.

Persistence and a group effort is what is needed. This chap, and others like him, are stealing from us, not just our articles, but our incomes as well.

Since he is being so persistent about stealing our stuff, we need to be persistent, also. Please everyone, check his sites for your HubPages user name and file on him if you find that your work has been stolen. Please file on him with Amazon, eBay, Google, Bing -- anyone and everyone.

Judi Bee, I am having trouble finding the thread you started on this back in April, but as I recall you wrote up step-by-step instructions for filing a DMCA, and I think it was very helpful and a great idea. If anyone out there has never filed a DMCA, the instructions are very helpful. At first it might seem a little daunting but it is very easy after you have one or two under your belt -- it's click, click, click, paste. You can include more than one article in a single DMCA. Here's how to file with Google:

    1. Go here: http://support.google.com/bin/static.py … page=ts.cs

    2. Choose the third bubble down, "Web Search."

    3. New choices will come up on the screen. Choose the last bubble, "I have a legal issue that is not mentioned above."

    4. More new choices. Choose the first bubble, "I have found content that may violate my copyright."

    5. More new choices. Click on the first bubble, "Yes, I am the copyright owner or am authorized to act on behalf of the owner of an exclusive right that is allegedly infringed."

    6. Read the next message and click on the "Yes" bubble for "I have read the above and wish to proceed."

    7. For "What is the allegedly infringing work in question?" choose "Text"

    8. More info to read will pop up. Click on the in-text link "This form" in the red sentence that reads "Otherwise, please use this form to submit your request. Note that you may be required to log in to a Google Account to submit your request."

    9. Fill in your name and other persona; information they ask for.

    10. In the box provided, describe what has happened, something like "my entire original HubPages article has been copied and posted on a site full of copied work." The paste in a few sample sentences from your work.

11.In the box titled "Where can we see an authorized example of the work?" paste in the article's HubPages URL.

    12. In the box titled "Location of infringing material:" paste in the URL of the same article on the theif's site.

    13. Check off the sworn statements, type in your name and date as a signature, and you're done.

I don't understand why HubPages can't (won't) simply make it impossible to click, highlight, and copy content. Is this feature really asking a lot? I'm tired of continuously dealing with this problem. I know this suggestion has been brought up before. Is there a reason why this hasn't been done?

Hi Theherbivorehippi, just to explain how this process works.
Firstly, he isn't simply copying and pasting the articles, he is scraping them automatically. Secondly, even if the 'copy' feature was disabled (and there are a few lines of script that will do this) by viewing the 'page source' you can still copy and paste content.
      Hope this helps.

On the few that I looked at, such as Social Issues, I've noticed he has also copied WORD for WORD Hubpages sub-category headings.  HubPages has some different ones to most websites, but what he's doing is EXACT.

If you have anything in the Social Issues category, I'd check it out. Searching my username shows nothing - but I'm tempted to write a hub (not a terribly good one, why waste my time?) and see if it pops up.
