How to counteract the drop in your HubPages views

   All of my hubs have had very consistent daily traffic, some of them for weeks and months since they were first published. I have noticed no significant decreases in views at all, and that's because my incoming traffic relies on a lot more than just Google alone. My best suggestion is for all of you to diversify, to not put all of your eggs in one basket. Try posting your HubPages links in social media sites where appropriate, submit your hubs and profile links to other search engines besides Google, use free self-promotion whenever you can with your friends, family and co-workers and urge them to forward on the links to your hubs that you email to them. Last but not least, consider making up some business cards with your name and a link to your HubPages profile, hand them out to whomever, and whenever possible, telling people that you're a writer. All in all, if you want real self-sustaining traffic, you have to push hard with self-promotion and make your hubs and your profile go viral!

      I've been saying this for months I do disagree with the family/friends promotion as that's usually minimal traffic and they'll feel spammed.  I recommend MFP images at least a third of my traffic is from Pinterest now.

         Ditto - there is just no reason to spam your family and friends in a futile effort to earn money.  HP is not Amway.
         
         Nor do I see any value of passing out business cards on the street - given that the earnings from a single view is less than a penny and that very, very few people will follow the link on a card this has to be a losing proposition.

            Excellent points, Wilderness! Best to do the math before passing out cards on the street. However, leaving one at the hairdresser, bulletin boards on campuses, etc. might be worth it ("Earn extra ongoing income writing for HubPages")... Plus, if you're discussing HubPages with someone who wants extra income you can pull out a business card and they can see your examples.
            
            I also agree--HP is not Amway--don't pimp out your friends and family. If they want to read, they will. Mention it, but then drop the subject (and a business card if they want to write, too).
            
            Again, rate of return is probably low, but might be worth it in a few rare cases. Design and print your own out of card stock and cut them out yourself--save lots of money that way, create a unique and engaging design, plus you can change the text any time based on results and feedback.

            I agree. It usually doesn't help to spam family and friends as it only annoys them. I will sometimes post my hubs on social medias, but I forget much of the time. With that being said, I don't really have issues with increased traffic. It automatically has been increasing each day, mostly through Google. I think a lot of it has to do with finding the right keywords through the Google Keyword Tool.

      Nothing is better and consistent than Google traffic. All other promotion methods are time consuming and give a little instant traffic only.
      Spending one hour on keywords research of your topic and making good keyword rich search friendly title and then write content in your own words will do a lot for your hubs to get continue search traffic thorough out life.
      
      And never forget to update your hubs once in a 3 months. I was getting 2000+ view a day of my 52 hubs 3-4 months back but views were down to 1400 a day last month. Now I updated half of my hubs and views and Google traffic is back again to 2000+ views a day within 15 days. Google loves fresh content, keep updating your hubs frequently.

         Excellent advice!! Thanks! I'd forgotten (almost) about updating articles regularly to provide fresh content for Google's gluttony (which we love). That's probably what's wrong with some of my under-performers. I'll check! Thanks again!

      Those are some pretty smart ideas, and how do you go about submitting your hubs and profile to those search engines? For some reason I feel like if you search the name of your hub enough that it will eventually show up, I'm most probably wrong haha

      It helps to belong to Yahoo groups that are about the topics you write about. You can share your link with others there if it is something that would help them or they'd have an interest in.
      
      I wrote a hub about a lot of ideas. Look for Unusual Ways to Get Free Traffic. There are other hubs here too that will help.
      
      I want to say though, that the ones hit by Google this time seem to be those that have been here for several years. Most of them have already done all of these things and were making good incomes. It is discouraging, but we have earned money in the past from them.

      I find one way to get "viral" results (spotty, but occasionally I hit the jackpot) is by submitting to Reddit. They're kind of a pain, but the results top some of the more traditional sources, at least short-term, and you really can get a hub to go viral instantly occasionally: well worth the time to submit to Reddit, especially on under-performing hubs. Note that results tend to be short-term, for some reason. So, as soon as you post a hub that you're concerned might be under-performing, submit it to Reddit. Note that you'll need to post non-personal stuff to Reddit, too, (ratio of 1:10 they say) because they don't want Reddit to be self-promotional. Ha. :-) Worth a try with a few of your lowest-scoring hubs: see what happens. Note that picking the right category in Reddit is key: pick a correct category but a higher-level one that has lots of "subscribers".

   You have to do some self-promotion to maintain traffic. I agree with not using friends and family for promotion -- just too many pitfalls there.
   
   For my WordPress blog, I have used Facebook, Twitter, Google+, StumbleUpon, and Tumblr. Two of those five were automatically pushed out and all the other three required were selecting the share button once it was published.
   
   It's a little bit of work, but the more you put into the more can get out of it.

      Thanks for the tip.  All that you have suggested I have done but it seems to me that I need to do some research.  I was solicited for the Hubpages job through Monster.com the company to find you work at home.  When I signed on to Hubpages the introductory reading listed several things as with any reader they remember what stands out to be important to them.  For me it was the percentage split and the statement of promoting your Hubs as if they had the power to get all your hard work placed online before the public.  So I since the percentage was so high and the employee does all the work I wasn't expecting no training or promotion.  But you live and you learn.  This isn't the first time that I misunderstood a guarantee quote.

   I agree, there are a lot of little things you can do, too.
   I am not that tech savy, and don't bother much with keywords and seo.
   I just went through all of my hubs ( I now only have about 100+) in the past few of days and tweeted all of them with hashtags. I also pinned a few, and especially focused on some of my very early ones to make sure I didn't have too many amazon ads, added some videos, attributed some photos ad graphics that didn't have them, added polls and maps where I could. My overall hubscore is up; I think my overall quality is up.
   It's not a huge leap, but I think constant small steps toward improvement will help.

      Rochelle Frank, not only is your overall hubscore up, I'm loving that little number by your photo, too! Great job! It sounds like you made a HUGE improvement in your hubs. Keep up the good work! Don't forget to write new content, too: at some point the maintenance on the old hubs just isn't worth the traffic and you need to write new stuff to get the Google eye. It's what we're here for, among other things.
      
      Keep up the good work! You're on the right tracks and doing the right things.
      
      One suggestion: Don't forget to use the Title Tuner regularly. I find it one of the most powerful tools for seeing what people are actually typing in to google (or whatever) that eventually got them to my article. Titles are very important, though I'm not suggesting mine are the best: it's an area I'm working on.

         The Google Adwords Keyword Tool is an excellent free tool to use. I use it all the time when writing new hubs. I am able to target the traffic I want from Google. I agree with you Laura, the Title Tuner is excellent too.
