According to THE ADVOCATE magazine (22 August 2013):
"The unfounded fear that gay people are pedophiles has often come up in discussions of gay teachers. In 1978 a California ballot proposal known as the Briggs Initiative (named after the proposition’s leading advocate, state senator John Briggs) would have prohibited gays and lesbians from teaching in schools. Its proponents rallied around the myth that homosexuality and pedophilia are linked, despite numerous studies confirming that most pedophiles actually identify as heterosexual.
Gay San Francisco city supervisor Harvey Milk campaigned against the Briggs Initative, and even Republican Ronald Reagan, who had recently completed his tenure as California's governor, opposed the measure. President Jimmy Carter also spoke out against the proposal, and in November 1978 the anti-gay proposition went down to defeat at the ballot box, with 58% of California voters rejecting it."
And, THE ADVOCATE also notes the following:
"But more than three decades later, the fear of being recognized as LGBT still weighs heavily on many teachers. A new study, reported on by the U.K's TES Magazine, indicates that LGBT teachers are less likely than straights to challenge anti-gay bullying in the classroom, out of fear they might be perceived as gay by other students or faculty."
What is your opinion about the presence of GLBT teachers in the public school classroom.
(Please note that this question refers only to GLBT teachers in the PUBLIC school classroom?
Teachers are and should be all kinds of people. Who cares if they are gay, straight, trans etc?
THANK YOU, +1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000!
I agree, to an extent. If a teacher's beliefs have no impact on his/her profession, then I see no problem. If everything becomes more about the teacher than the curriculum, then there is a problem.
What a teacher does on his/her own time is his/her own business. Period.
I'm not sure why it would matter. Being around a gay person doesn't "turn" someone gay so I'm not sure what the point would be in keeping them from teaching.
I love these thread titles, especially when they are capitalized! I bope you get your answer OP!
The correlation between being LGBT and being a pedophile is totally atavistic in logic. There are people who are heterosexual who are pedophiles. Case in point was the female teacher who had a relationship with a 16 year old male high school student.
Another case in point was the male teacher who left his wife and children to live with a 17 year old female high school student. The correlation between being a homosexual and a pedophile is analogous to an only child being spoiled and selfish. Both are idiotic and illogical ASSumptions to say the least.
A teacher need to be respectable. He/she needs to dress well, and be presentable in grooming and demeanor. A teacher should not dress with an abundance of sex appeal.
Teachers need to teach without it being so much about them. What is appropriate for the students' learning environment and ability to focus on the subject being taught? The focus should be solely about the subject being taught. The teacher needs to have respect for the students. The teacher needs to have respect for the institution which hired him/her. Why is it even a question, as far as a teacher's gender orientation?
How about a lesbian/gay/bisexual Sunday School teacher? It would make for an interesting debate.

I'm bisexual and have friends who are in the LGBTQA community. All we ask from our straight friends is to treat us with kindness and respect. If a straight person came to me and said they only wanted to be friends because I am bi, then that's a big stinking red flag. Friendship is more than just...

Can a gay man be attracted to a specific girl, but not women in general, and still be gay, not bi?As a writer, i'm wondering if it's possible for a gay or straight character to be attracted to a person of the gender that opposes their typical sexuality? Like, a gay person to be in love with a...

Hey there,Might seem like an odd question to some (maybe all) of you, but seriously, how can a male not get confused by this stuff one sees and hears every day around him? I'm a guy who's really not into all the "bi-curious"/bisexual stuff women seem to have nowadays, I just want a truly...
